Audi’s foot into American Racing.
In 1988, the Audi 200 Turbo Quattro dominated the Trans-AM series, despite missing three rounds and undergoing last-minute development for the IMSA GT series.
Based on the street car, the 200 featured a 2.1L 5-cylinder turbo engine, pushing up to 550 hp at around 2.1 bar (30 PSI). Although it was underpowered compared to its competitors, the Audi 200’s strategic setup allowed it to maintain power in key rev ranges. Paired with the iconic quattro AWD system, this combination led Audi to dominate the season and win the constructors’ championship.
In contrast, the 1989 Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO was a very different machine, built specifically for the IMSA GTO series. It ran a 2.2L 5-cylinder turbo from the Audi Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak, producing an impressive 720 hp at around 3 bar (43 PSI).
The 90 Quattro’s bodywork and chassis were heavily modified from the street car, with a metal frame and plastic skin replacing the standard body, while the only shared feature with the production car was the steel roof.
Audi’s success in the late 1980s led to significant changes in both the Trans-AM and IMSA GT series rule books, as their dominance with the quattro system and turbocharged engines resulted in a backlash from American manufacturers.
To level the playing field, rule changes required cars to be rear-wheel drive and have V8 engines, effectively excluding Audi’s innovative cars. This move also affected other European manufacturers that had found success in these series.
Despite the changes, Audi’s push into the American racing scene had already made a significant impact, demonstrating the effectiveness of their quattro technology and turbocharged performance.

Three generation, three shades of yellow. Which is your favorite?
Back in March, I participated in a day-long rally to mighty @themagarigawaclub on the Boso Peninsula outside of Tokyo.
During the drive organized by @type7 and @roundcatracing , we happened to stop at a gas station in the countryside of Chiba prefecture to fill up the yellow 911s.

The dreams have a heartbeat now.
They have been doubted for doing this. A car show in Germany can never be as cool, too many regulations and after all it’s their first time out of Poland.
Objectively, I understood some concerns about Ultrace Germany. But they missed one fact: this is no random show, we are talking about @ultrace_official .
Knowing the guys for some time now and attending their event in Poland for even longer, I had great trust and belief into their vision. And man, did they deliver.
To be quite clear: I have never been on a more exclusive and well curated car show in my entire life and I consider myself a more-than-regular attendee of those.
Le Mans legends, Japanese GT championship icons, Group 5 silhouettes, custom racecar builds, factory prototypes, factory works vehicles…the list goes on and on.
Between it all the air was filled with actual enthusiasm and humanity. Mercedes museum mechanics helping out fixing BMW prototype and vice versa, even doing a collab post on Instagram. Nothing but impressive.
My cover text says it all: this felt more like some super exclusive classic racing trophy paddock than a car show. This post is specifically related to racing, more event covering will be shared in the next weeks. 20 slides could never be enough.
Thanks to @adrian_ultrace , @michal_ultrace , @kacper_ultrace and the team once again for letting me experiencing this unique event. Ultrace isn’t just an event or brand anymore – it’s a movement.
If not now then when?

Let me introduce you to the F1 V10-powered Renault Espace.
In 1994, Renault and Williams F1 collaborated to create a concept that was designed to celebrate both the 10th anniversary of the Renault Espace – Europe’s pioneering MPV back in the days – and Renault’s success in Formula One.
Rather than the conventional soccer mom van, this one was fitted with the 3.5-liter Renault RS5 V10 engine from a Williams FW15C F1 car, producing around 800 horsepower.
It was mid-mounted non a carbon-fiber chassis structure developed by Matra, paired with F1-spec suspension and carbon brakes.
The project cat retained the silhouette of an Espace but flared arches, a massive rear wing and in general aggressive aero were fitted. Accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) happened in just 2.8 seconds and top speed was way over 300 km/h (186 mph).
Another prime example of what can be created if engineers have little to no boundaries – wild 90s.

The BMW X5 Le Mans was the first actual Sports Utility Vehicle. Basically an E53 chassis on steroids.
BMW took the V12 from its 1999 Le Mans winner V12 LMR and dropped the 6,1L NA it into their first SUV. With over 700 hp and 720 Nm the car felt more like pit lane than yoga mum grocery hauler.
In 2001, Hans-Joachim “Striezel” Stuck took it around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:49.92, hitting a max. speed of 311 km/h on the straight. For a 2t+ SUV, that was completely absurd — race car numbers wrapped in a family car silhouette.
Unfortunately, the X5 Le Mans was never meant for production. It was BMW M showing what could be done even to a non-sportscar chassis: Le Mans V12, manual gearbox, BBS E88s, lowered stance and a pretty early sense of how crazy performance SUVs would eventually become in the upcoming decades.
I can remember watching this footage probably more than ten years ago. Coming across this again, it was too good not to put a piece of content together about it.

My first @heizrclub event and I was utterly impressed. The music, food, organisation, of course the cars but also the overall venue design was a whole vibe.
Le Mans legends from @porsche.museum and @banzai.collection shared the space with Ligne Roset Togo sofas and Barcelona chairs by @jft.designs .
HEIZR Industries indeed felt a lot like I would imagine a future RENNFRAMES gathering. Thank you for having me and I need that playlist!
