journal entries 👁️ part of my going back to traditional art is practicing being more confident with my lines, whether in sketching or brush strokes, so i’ve recently turned to journaling. when i’m working on a piece or outside like at a coffee shop, i journal on the side. i try to make it a goal when i’m out to draw at least one thing that catches my eye.

going back to traditional, 10 years since i last painted on canvas and 2 years since i last made anything non-digital. there’s so much to learn and a long way to go but i’m excited.

ecce homo ❤️🔥
today marks the start of semana santa, a catholic tradition whose imagery i draw constant inspiration from.
to commemorate, this is my reinterpretation of the ecce homo, latin for “behold the man”, words uttered by pontius pilate when he presented the scourged jesus to the crowd before his crucifixion, now a name for depictions in christian art of the christ in this particular scene.
in this piece, i was inspired by objects from filipino holy week traditions, like the palm sunday palaspas, colonial carrozas, and one i recently discovered: atochas, a string of diamonds or jewels placed on the head of christ, seen in images in parts of luzon and the visayas.
through these symbols, i tried to explore themes often seen as contradictory: the masculine and feminine, the human and divine, the modest and adorned, and how queer people are continually made to choose between these binaries—a constant presentation of the self, and the external “scourging” that comes from it.

i’m so happy i finally get to share this! working on this poster was so special because it was inspired by an illustration i made in 2024 (see slides 5-6). it also was through that illustration that Arlo @rizalwritersstudio and i met and started working together last year. later on, Arlo shared that my illustration inspired him while writing this story, which is still insane to think about 😭❤️🔥
all my gratitude goes to Arlo and DUP for seeing and trusting my vision not just in this project but in all the work we’ve done so far! it was an honor helping bring to life this very important story of our nation’s migrant workers. i’m so excited to finally see the show, and i hope you all can too.
