POV: After a limited but widely-supported run last March, we joined multi-awarded film and theater star and visual artist @mr.sandinomartin as he took us on an inside look at the closing show of @dulaang_up ’s “Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan”. Praised for his performance on the equally powerful piece on the diasporic experience and the displacement of the self, Martin opens doors to final tech rehearsals, dressing room preparations, in between scenes-chaos, and post-run dance-offs. Over the weekend, the acclaimed multi-disciplinary actor also appeared in an intimate staged reading of “El Fuego del Alma”, adapted from Tennessee Williams’ “Summer and Smoke”. We’re down to our last PeliDula for this season! We conclude this semester’s 𝗣𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗗𝘂𝗹𝗮 with “𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘀”. Adapted from Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht Directed by Herbie Go Set during the Moro conflict, Nanay Bangis follows a mother who survives by moving through war and pushing forward even as the cost of survival takes everything from her. Hi mga ka ViTalks! It’s been over a month since I attended the Press Call for Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas’s closing production for their 48th season, Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan. This also marks the much-awaited comeback of Sandino Martin to the stage—returning to where his theatre journey began after a long hiatus. As one of their media partners, I feel incredibly proud to have witnessed this powerful piece from sneak preview to preview night. Goosebumps agad from the first glimpse, and seeing the full production live was truly a testament to the team’s passion and hard work. This production is part of Dulaang UP’s continuous mission to create relevant and thought-provoking theatre as they move closer to their 50th season. Under the direction and writing of Arlo Deguzman, the play revives the UP Playwrights’ Theatre—now known as DUP Playwrights—bringing fresh yet deeply rooted Filipino narratives to life. Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan is a moving tribute to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), capturing their emotional realities through powerful storytelling, movement, and music. It reflects the sacrifices of families separated by distance—stories of longing, resilience, and the quiet burdens carried by those who leave and those who stay. Whether you’re an OFW or someone with loved ones abroad, the play resonates deeply and invites reflection on what “home” truly means. Beyond the stage, Dulaang UP expanded the experience through programs like DUP Social and DUP Studio—offering free activities such as staged readings, networking events, backstage tours, and workshops that bring audiences closer to the art of theatre. The Play runs from March 12 to 29, 2026 at the IBG-KAL Theater in UP Diliman, the production not only showcased artistic excellence but also sparked important conversations about identity, sacrifice, and belonging.
