Render Me Softly Festival

So excited for the 𝓣𝓮𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻 𝓒𝓸𝓷𝓷𝓮𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷𝓼 screening tomorrow at Capitol Theatre (@capitolw65th )! These films were specially curated to emphasize a deep connection to the natural world, the possibility of transformation, and moments of wonder in close encounters with animals. Featuring hand painted, stop motion, and digitally rendered films, that truly explore the vastness of experimental animation. Lights, ipads, ACTION! ✨ This past Friday, we gathered for Hilos Familiares, a stop motion animation workshop with Render Me Softly (@rendermesoftly.mp4 ), led by artists Laura Camila Medina and James Negron. The space quickly came alive with imagination in this collaborative experience. Me encantó ver King at the workshop – a 6 year old and an artist in his own right! He was our little assistant all evening, keeping us on track with his vision and making us all feel at home during the workshop. Using technology borrowed from the Cleveland Institute of Art, we collaborated to transform family memories into visual collages. We’re excited to share that the final animations will be featured at our Block Party Exhibition on June 26th and we’d love to see you there. Grateful to everyone who showed up, shared their creativity, and helped make the evening so meaningful 💛 /// ¡Luces, iPads, ACCIÓN! ✨ Este pasado viernes nos reunimos para Hilos Familiares, un taller de animación stop motion junto a Render Me Softly (@rendermesoftly.mp4 ), dirigido por les artistas Laura Camila Medina y James Negrón. El espacio rapidito se llenó de imaginación en esta experiencia colaborativa.¡Me encantó ver a King en el taller! Con solo 6 añitos, ya es artista por derecho propio. Fue nuestro asistente pequeño toda la noche, manteniéndonos enfocados con su visión y haciendo que todes nos sintiéramos en casa durante el taller. Usando tecnología prestada por el Cleveland Institute of Art, colaboramos para transformar memorias familiares en collages visuales. Nos emociona compartir que las animaciones finales se estarán presentando en nuestra Exhibición Block Party el 26 de junio, y nos encantaría verles allí. Laura (@lil___lau ) and James (@fruitisgudd ) are so excited to teach 𝓗𝓲𝓵𝓸𝓼 𝓕𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓵𝓲𝓪𝓻𝓮𝓼, an experimental stop motion workshop that activates familial archives tomorrow at @jdbcac at 6 pm! There’s just a few more spots to participate, check out the link in bio for more info <3 Here’s a little more about them: James Negron (he/him) is a VERY queer and trans Latinx artist transplanted in Cleveland, OH. After moving to OH from NJ to receive his BFA in Sculpture and Expanded Media from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2024, he happily decided to make Cleveland his home (still hasn’t changed his state of residence, shhh). He uses a variety of media, primarily fiber and textiles, to communicate themes of memory, mental health, and queer identity within his work. By implementing soft, colorful, and shiny materials, he addresses heavy and deeply personal subject matter in a playful, approachable manner. James strongly believes in the therapeutic benefits that art making has to offer, and as an art educator, his priority is to make material processes more accessible to youth through alternative approaches and exemplification. Along with being an artist and educator, James does fundraising work with arts and culture non-profits and serves on the Service to Artists Committee for the College Art Association. When he’s not doing any of the above, you can find James cheffing it away in the kitchen or sitting on the stoop of his apartment, saying hi to all the dogs that walk by!

In collaboration with @jdbcac , Render Me Softly presents 𝑯𝒊𝒍𝒐𝒔 𝑭𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒔, an experimental stop motion workshop taught by @lil___lau and @fruitisgudd where we’ll transform personal memories and photographs into moving images. Join us on May 1st from 6 - 8 pm when we’ll experiment with a variety of material stations including watercolor backgrounds, charcoal drawing, paper cut-outs, and wool felting. This workshop is free and open to all ages; intergenerational families are especially encouraged to attend. Bring your family, your stories, and your creativity. We invite you to bring photos of loved ones, meaningful trinkets, and paper materials to incorporate into the animation. Don’t have a physical photo?
