I’ve had this song stuck in my head for a while now. It’s a Joe Hisaishi masterpiece! I rearranged it for flute, brass, and percussion. (FREE Hi-Fives if you know the movie it’s from!) The @cypresshill@tinydesk concert is up now! Im a big fan so this is extra exciting to me. It was a fun challenge to arrange horn parts for this extremely stripped down performance. Here’s a breakdown of what we did and how i was thinking as an arranger. [Sam Koff on tpt and Reggie Pace and John Hulley on tbn]
1. “Hand on the Pump”
We weren’t completely sure what the final instrumentation was gonna be, so we over prepared in order for us to be FLEXIBLE with what the band wanted to do. Since this is the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, I wanted to write something that was deep in the culture. So I chose the God Father Of Soul James Brown as the influence for this one! The music of James Brown is so ingrained into the sound of hip hop drums that i had to write something that would make @funkyfredwesley proud of me! Had to get that SLIDE in there! During the verses we had some JB style hits and we covered the background sample from Hand on the Pump! Shouts outs to @moneymark on the bassline!
2. “How I could Just K*ll a Man”
Staying with the theme of Classic Hip Hop, we played the organ riff from the Mohawks classic “Champ” ! The funky organ is a rap staple!
3. “Insane in the Membrane”
Cypress Hill was already playing this song with a flip of the Zapp classic “More Bounce to the Ounce” in it. So i had the idea that our hornline would be Roger Troutman’s adlibs from the intro of the song. I love the way it sounds on horns! Zapp is 🔥
4. “Rap Superstar”
This song has a lot of strings and hits in it. So we just tried to cover as much of that as we could. I was getting my Bass trombone on! Sam and John had the idea to play that line with that string/synth line through the interlude. A lot of hits and small lines in this one!
