In the theater of war——we’re not in the audience. We’re on the stage looking out. There are no auditions. Everyone is a cast member and plays a part. Most of us without any training; without any skills. Most of us don’t actually know that we’re cast. Then there is a much smaller group of people that are running the show. They own the building. They operate the spotlights and sound system and have built props for us to hold and use and created a variety of stunning visual special effects and a palette of audio samples using the very latest of technology. They provide a few costumes but mostly we wear our own clothes. They dictate when the show starts and ends. And sometimes without warning the curtains fly open and the raw, unfiltered play suddenly begins. There are no exits and no wings to hide in on this stage. No real script except maybe to kill or be killed and all improvised using the props provided. The opening scenes are always predictable; a scramble to survive in the madness and horrific chaos. But It’s with every new play that we create something never before seen and more nefarious and without previous context, a new way to bleed, that the people running the show love and thrive on. We, as the actors, can never protest or go on strike. The theater of war is a never ending production. Tickets on sale year round. Love y’all. ❤️ Hold tightly to each other. Peace be with you.

Wrote the sketch of this song in 1990 just soon after Nelson Mandela was released from prison for opposing Apartheid. The demo was recorded at Cole Rehearsals at the same place RATM recorded ‘Evil Empire’ . Yauch made the video. We all sing the song. Notes from Adam Horovitz——“Something’s Got to Give” is one of my all time favorites ‘cause of all the elements inside; mixing live music with samples of our live music, live vocals with samples of our vocals, the lyrics and their sentiment, and the fucked-up bass. The music came from a tape of us jamming at Cole Practice Space. Maybe six months later we were listening back to a bunch of tapes and found this stuff. We looped like ten bars of music on Mike’s sampler and put them in a song type arrangement. Yauch wrote some lyrics, and me, Adam, Mike and Mark sang them. Mario went in the other room with a cassette of the music and sang the fucked-up high-pitched sound on a four-track, and then looped that. There’s no hidden message behind the lyrics; they’re pretty direct. To me this song just sounds funky. And I really like that the main instrument making the music is a DX7. As a little footnote, the 'smile’ with laughing I found in ‘89 or so. I was at this predominantly white mall (in L.A. or Texas) and in this crowded camera store there was this thing called 'the Smile Machine’ or something like that. I pushed the little button and the batteries were all dead so it came out like the devil making fun of us all in the mall. It just stuck with me like the ‘just say no’ campaign. With how deep in America racism is, the image of the Smile Machine in the white mall fit nice in this song.” —Adam Horovitz, 1999,

Sooo. Why was I born in Detroit? My Mexican mother and my Japanese father were in love. How cute. They were living in Texas. Interracial marriage was ILLEGAL. Not so cute! Texas law remained until June of ‘67. Couples were being put in prison just for being married. This was only 55 years ago. Some of these lawmakers are still alive. Some are still in power. My parents left their family in San Antonio and found jobs in Michigan. They married. I was born......an activist. ———this is the very short thumbnail version of the story. Some of the details are heartbreaking. Art and music saved our lives. Today in 2023; Still healing. Love y’all ❤️
