This mural is part of Merri-Bek Murals project from
@merri_bekcitycouncil and
@artsmerri_bek and works as a tribute to the role and impact that migrant communities have had in shaping the cultural identity of a city like Melbourne.
Painted on the side wall of PRONIA, the mural is connected to this organisation that has supported generations of the Greek - Australian community through aged care, family services, disability support, and community programs, helping people stay connected to culture, language, and community while building their lives in Australia.
The artwork depicts Dimitri, a man of Greek background who migrated to Australia at the age of 18 and built a new life here. For the past 20 years, he has been cooking for elder people and community members experiencing vulnerability.
For me, Dimitri represents the often unseen but essential work that sustains communities and contributes to the wellbeing, dignity, and connection of those around us.
