Join Jeanna Wigger, co-author of “Stitch It, Don’t Ditch It: Simple hand-sewn repairs to help you love your clothes for longer,” for a deep-dive into how to tackle garment repairs by hand. In this workshop, you’ll be guided through the process of considering the type of damage to your clothes and which materials and hand mending approach will best work together for a long-lasting repair. Using just a few core hand sewing techniques and basic sewing supplies, you can repair just about anything made of textiles, either visibly or subtly, based on your preference, skills, and your garment’s needs.  Bring a damaged article of clothing and any specialty repair materials (such as a suitable zipper or specific fabric); hand sewing supplies and patch material will be included in the workshop. Copies of the book “Stitch It, Don’t Ditch It” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Wednesday October 15th 6:00-8:00pm Free Event At Rimbert Illustration 617 N Callow Ave @rimbertillustration @thepeoplesmending

Today we celebrate cooperative principle #6 - cooperation among cooperatives. Not only do we have connections to local co-ops like our good friends @orcas_food_coop , but we are now also connected to @sewardcoop and @msmarketcoop by way of our board member Mary (@refusing_refuse ) who used to work for both of them before moving to Kitsap. While all of us food co-ops are independently run, we overlap in our values of serving the community and often share resources with each other. As we embark on more growth for our little co-op, we are constantly energized by the work co-ops are doing nationally.

Discussing topics of Kitsap County's lack of protections for farmland, the importance of working directly with local producers, and the direction of our very own cooperative may take on a more serious tone, but we're grateful to those who deem the topics imperative. Training 1 of 2 to properly integrate our new board members commenced last night. We're very fortunate to have such impressive people in our corner. Thanks to @ashleyspub for providing space and keeping us hydrated 🍺

To piggyback on yesterday’s post about #overconsumption, it’s important not to be lulled or tricked into believing that “green” consumption is somehow #sustainable. For example, converting from #singleuseplastic or #paper to #reusablebags are fine (if we actually remember to bring and reuse them), but filling them full of stuff we want but probably don’t need is actually the bigger problem. We need to buy less. #REDUCE #Refuse #Rethink #Reuse #Repair #Borrow or #Share

*Popcorn Compost* Today, I started to make some popcorn compost. I decided to do this to reduce the impact of #foodwaste. It is so important that you put your food waste in the compost bin. When you put your food “waste” into the general bin, it is sent to landfill and releases methane. The vast majority of food waste being sent to landfill is not coming from households. A lot of it is coming from schools and large businesses such as restaurants and cinemas. I sourced my stale popcorn from @eclipsecinemas_bundoran . A big thank you to the cinema for helping out on this project! #sustainability To make compost you need to have an even balance of carbon and nitrogen rich materials. To see how to make your own compost at home, click the link in my Bio to see my @irishcountryliving article on food waste and composting. We have a @hotbincomposting composter which is great and simple to use! #compost #foodwastetips #ireland #cinema #bundoran #donegal #popcorn #reducewaste #environment #methane #compostbin #cutthecrapandcook #compostbin #eclipsecinemas #methane #foodwasteprevention #myHOTBIN #food #article #farmers #farmersjournal #carbon #nitrogen #science #garden #sustainable #sustainableliving

In this journey of zero waste living, it’s important to find a community of like minded people to talk to. I was so happy to attend last nights Zero Waste Meetup organized by @zwmpls . It was an opportunity to meet others in the Twin Cities who are doing what they can to live more sustainably, and it was really nice to meet so many people that I’ve interacted with online 😘 We had some great discussions on being inclusive, supporting people currently outside of the movement, communicating with loved ones about this lifestyle, and our thoughts on the straw ban from Starbucks. I hope we can do this again!
