We’re hiring an Intermediate Designer / Job Captain. Red Dot Studio is looking for a thoughtful, detail-oriented designer to join our San Francisco Bay Area team. This role offers the opportunity to work across all phases of design—from early concept through construction—with a focus on strong drawing, coordination, and craft within a collaborative, design-driven studio. This position is currently remote, with the expectation of transitioning to a hybrid Bay Area schedule. If you’re interested, please see details linked in bio.

Across from Ocean Beach, a 1940s house is transformed into a modern surf retreat by Red Dot Studio with interiors by Saffron + Poe. While the architecture reworks the home’s form and orientation, the focus inside is on warmth, durability, and everyday living. Guided by the principles of wabi-sabi, interiors pair charred wood cabinetry, concrete surfaces, and exposed beams with custom, flexible furnishings—designed for a lifestyle shaped by surf, sand, and family. A soft, coastal palette and materials that patina over time complete the lived-in feel. A Surfer’s Paradise By The Dunes 🌊 Set just across from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, this thoughtfully reimagined home was designed for a young family seeking both beauty and everyday ease. In collaboration with @reddotstudio , we worked to transform the space into a warm, modern retreat, rooted in natural materials and shaped by the rhythms of coastal living. Drawing from principles of wabi-sabi and midcentury simplicity, our approach focused on craftsmanship, texture, and livability. Shou sugi ban cabinetry, concrete surfaces, and exposed wood beams create a grounded, tactile palette, while custom furnishings and artisan-made pieces bring a sense of individuality to each room. Designed to evolve with its surroundings, the home embraces materials that patina over time - softening, weathering, and becoming more beautiful with age. We are thrilled to be sharing this project reveal alongside our feature in @interiordesignmag (link in bio), and look so forward to sharing more 🤍 Interior Design: @saffronandpoe Architecture: @reddotstudio Builders: @saturn_construction Landscaping: @edgelands_design Photography: @margaretaustin_photo Styling: @hereandwest Publicity: @melissa_wagner_creative @interiordesignmag article written by @efazzare

For a time, we laid down our tools. In a difficult funding climate, work on the Herb House @sabbathdaylakeshakervillage paused. But the garden never stopped growing. Now the project is back in motion, directly connected to living Shaker soil, to the herb garden and the spaces where plants are dried, prepared, and shared. This is not a static preservation effort, but an environment tied to cultivation, seasonality, and daily practice. Design here is less about insertion and more about stewardship, supporting the quiet continuity between land, labor, and structure. Grateful to see it moving forward again. — #sabbathdaylake #shakervillage #herbhouse #historicpreservation #reddotstudio

We’ve had the opportunity to learn about Shaker material culture from the inside through our work at @sabbathdaylakeshakervillage The recently completed renovation of the historic Ox Barn reveals a layered history of shared inhabitation, where animals and humans moved through the same structure, shaping its wear, repair, and evolution over generations. The restoration, supported by a Save America’s Treasures Grant from the National Park Service, allowed us to uncover and honor those layers rather than erase them. History reminds us: inhabitation leaves a record. #reddotranch #saveamericatreasures #humanandnonhuman #shakerarchitecture #inhabitation

Design isn’t only about form and function. It’s about inhabitation. We’ve been reflecting on how architecture can support both human and non-human occupants, spaces shaped by how bodies move through them, how curiosity unfolds, how care is practiced daily, and how environments adapt over time. Not simply optimized for efficiency but calibrated for experience. Several forthcoming works explore these ideas through education and care. More soon. We’re refreshing our portfolio and revisiting the projects that shaped our approach to considered, long-view design. There are some projects, like this one, that is not in the final set of case studies, but still speaks to the care we bring to every home.
