Where did International Humanitarian Law begin? The answer lies in a combination of unexpected influences — a Civil War directive, a determined Swiss visionary, and the city that would become synonymous with humanitarian protection: Geneva. Our upcoming IHL 101 session, “The History of International Humanitarian Law,” explores the origins of the modern laws of war and how early humanitarian ideas evolved into the global legal framework used today. Senior Counsel for International Humanitarian Law Thomas Harper will examine: -The historical factors that shaped IHL -How early humanitarian action informed the Geneva Conventions -Why these foundations continue to matter in today’s conflicts 📅 May 21, 2026 🕘 9:00–10:00 AM (Live) | 5:00–6:00 PM (Encore) 💻 Virtual via Zoom 🔗 Register using the link in our bio! A great opportunity for anyone interested in the evolution of humanitarian protection and how historical events continue to shape global norms.

Many people don’t realize the American Red Cross offers programs specifically for youth and young people. Through leadership development, preparedness education, and community service opportunities, youth programs help participants build confidence, gain real‑world skills, and learn how to support their communities. Young people play an important role in advancing the Red Cross mission — both today and as future leaders. These programs create meaningful ways for youth to learn, contribute, and make a difference.

⏰ Just one week to go! The 21st annual Hometown Heroes Awards Luncheon is almost here, and as we put the final touches on this year’s celebration, we want to pause and say thank you. A heartfelt thank-you to California Resources Corporation (CRC), one of our platinum sponsors, whose generous support helps make this signature event possible, and helps power the Red Cross mission all year long. Through CRC’s partnership, we’re able to recognize and uplift local heroes whose compassion, courage and dedication make a lasting difference in our communities. Their support allows us to shine a light on individuals whose selfless actions often go unseen, while strengthening the community we all call home. 🎥 In this video, hear directly from one of last year’s Hometown Heroes as they share what this recognition, and CRC’s support, means to them. We’re honored to work alongside CRC as we count down to another inspiring #HometownHeroes celebration.

During Nurses Week, we are proud to celebrate Jane Dean, a nurse whose compassion and leadership reflect the very spirit of the American Red Cross. For more than three decades as a registered nurse and nearly a decade as a dedicated Red Cross volunteer, Jane has shown what it truly means to serve. From leading flu clinics to responding as an individual disaster care leader in the Long Beach and South Bay communities, her impact reaches far beyond any single role. What makes Jane extraordinary is not only her clinical expertise, but the way she lifts others along the way. Through training, mentorship and steady guidance, she has helped build strong, resilient teams across disaster health services, disaster mental health and disaster spiritual care. Because of her, volunteers feel prepared, supported and confident when our community needs them most. This Nurses Week, we honor Jane Dean for her service, her leadership and her unwavering commitment to helping others succeed. Her work continues the legacy of Clara Barton and reminds us that caring for people also means empowering those who serve. Thank you, Jane, for everything you do.

Did you know? The American Red Cross can help support recovery efforts after disasters — including helping communities move toward rebuilding. While rebuilding homes is not part of the Red Cross’s usual services, after major disasters we may provide recovery grants to trusted community partners that support longer‑term recovery efforts, such as housing and rebuilding. These partnerships help extend support beyond the immediate response and address ongoing needs as communities work to recover. Recovery takes time — and strong partnerships help make it possible.
