What lives in your subconscious has always wanted to become a story.
Join us for a creative writing seminar, Dreams and the Emotional Subconscious. In this four-week short story seminar hosted by native New York artist, writer, and director Alix Marello we draw on Jungian theory and magical realist writers to explore the landscapes of dream, symbol, emotion, and the subconscious. Over the course, you’ll write, workshop, and refine one complete short story.
Each student will receive a notebook. We write by hand here — no laptops, please. Come ready to put pen to paper.
All levels of experience are welcome.
These classes will take place from 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm on Tuesday evenings for 4 weeks:
- Week 1: May 19 - Introductions, Dream Sharing and Interpretations
- Week 2: May 26 - Dream Journals, Reverse Dreaming
- Week 3: June 2 - Feedback and Editing
- Week 4: June 9 - Reflections and Discussion

Artist Bio:
Alix holds an MFA in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California and a BA in English from Skidmore College. A recent Millay Arts Fellow, she used the residency to complete a short story collection, and she currently serves as the founder of the visual and literary arts magazine ‘Etchings Press’. During her time at USC, she received an academic mentorship with Celine Song, writer and director of the Oscar-nominated film ’Past Lives’.
Her screenwriting work has earned notable recognition: her feature-length screenplay was selected for the Austin Film Festival in fall 2024, and her short film reached the semi-finals of ScreenCraft’s 2025 competition. On the theatrical side, she was commissioned to write two plays for Saratoga Performing Arts Center and served as a staff writer for an Amazon Prime television series.
Alix is also the recipient of David Letterman’s playwriting residency, through which her work was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and performed off-Broadway. Her writing has been recognized with several national honors and she was selected as a storyteller for NPR’s ‘The Moth’.
