For years, one of the most frustrating parts of being an author has been trying to get ebooks into people’s hands without losing control of them. You want people to read your work. You want to send review copies, free copies, and early copies. But the minute you are sending files around, you are taking a risk. That is how books leak. That is how your work ends up being shared in ways you never agreed to. At the same time, the platforms that are supposed to make digital publishing easier have never really worked for us here. In Nigeria and across much of Africa, access is limited, payouts are difficult, thresholds get in the way, taxes chip away at what you earn, and even Kindle is not fully available to many of the readers these books are meant for. So I got tired of waiting for a system that actually considered us, and I built one. Sọna is a premium ebook platform for African stories, built for readers, authors, and publishers. I built it as an author who understands what it means to want your work read, protected, and paid for properly. And I built it as a reader who knows that reading digitally should feel easy, seamless, and worth coming back to. Readers can jump into a book on their phone, pick it back up later on another device, and continue right where they left off without thinking about it. Everything lives inside the app, so you’re worrying about nothing but reading your favourite title. This is the first version. It is web-first for now, but built to feel like an app, and the iOS and Android apps are coming very soon. If you read, write, publish, or care about African stories and how they reach people, I would really love for you to try it, share it, and tell someone who should know about it.
