I never thought I would, but I actually often enjoy writing obituaries. They're a chance I get to capture and celebrate someone whose life was hopefully well lived. But the obituary of AJ Crimson was one I absolutely didn't want to write. I didn't know AJ well, but, when I interviewed him last year, the story he told was incredibly inspiring, and he went out of his way to get in touch with me afterward with such sweet messages. He truly was one of a kind. I'm heartbroken for him and his family, and for the beauty industry that will suffer from missing what he could have done. He had so much left to give. He was a gift. Learn more about him in the @beautyindependent obituary linked in bio.

I am on a podcast. It’s @offtherecordwithyou with @skinowl founder @annietevelin available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify at the link in bio. It’s my first and possibly my last podcast appearance. I did it for Annie, who I adore and who is a gracious interviewer. I hope I didn’t massacre her podcast. Oh, and this quote is pretty much a synopsis of my daily existence of trying to push anything difficult to my colleagues @clairemcmack and @taylahgram . If they don’t want to off me, maybe listeners of @offtherecordwithyou will. My apologies to everyone involved.

I want to thank @paayalm for nominating me for the #womensupportingwomen challenge. Instead of a photo of me, I want to spotlight her and her amazing brand @essentialbodycouture . It’s truly elevating Indian skincare and showing the world what luxury is. My colleague @alice_alina_m wrote a terrific story about it for @beautyindependent that’s linked in the bio. I will never understand the contemporary focus on needing social media credit. We don’t support our fellow women with Instagram posts. We support them by showing up when it matters and helping out when it’s not validated by followers. I hope to honor the women that came before me in the path I take, not the billionaires profiting off of superficial fronting.

Being able to shine a little light on people who work tirelessly behind that scenes in the beauty industry without praise or public acknowledgement makes my job worth it. Thanks to my colleague @clairemcmack for assembling a list of more than 50 Black-owned service providers, including @mseedgroup co-founded by @mseedanthony . If you’re starting a beauty brand, definitely check out these resources. #indiebeauty #beautyindependent #underappreciated

There’s been a slew of baby personal care brands bringing minimalist millennial design philosophy to tots. @lovebubbsi decided to go in the other direction. Founded by Sweta Doshi, who was honored as a future leader by The Fragrance Foundation for her scent success at Bath & Body Works, the new brand is all about making bath time fun with animal-shaped bottles that are irresistibly cute. Ariane Goldman launched @hatchgal in 2011 because maternity destinations A Pea in the Pod and Destination Maternity didn’t suit her uber-chic boho style. Since then, she’s carefully grown it to include stores and the beauty collection Hatch Mama. Ariane intends for Hatch to evolve deftly with the women it appeals to. “I want to be a beautiful household name in a way that matters,” she tells @beautyindependent . See story at link in bio. Hat tip to @byjoanie for mentioning Hatch stood out amid a sea of retail concepts. #weareindiebeauty #cleanbeauty #femaleentrepreneur #beauty #entrepreneur

As the daughter of @repechage founder Lydia Sarfati, Shiri Sarfati had been getting facials practically all her life. When she became a mom, though, she didn’t have time to squeeze them in. So, she started mixing her own DIY skincare remedies at home to care for her skin on her schedule. Those remedies form the basis of @23_skin , an emerging brand that puts the power in beauty consumers’ hands. Find out more about Shiri and her brand @beautyindependent and via the link in bio. #weareindiebeauty #cleanbeauty #entrepreneur #beauty #skincare

The possibility of external funding can bring up existential questions for a brand. What is our place in the market? What does the future look like? @golde CEO and co-founder Trinity Mouzon considered those questions and concluded her brand didn’t need external funding now. “It was a matter of removing ourselves from the track that says, once you achieve X amount in revenue, you have to get investors,” she tells @beautyindependent . #weareindiebeauty #wellness #makewellnessinclusive #entrepreneur #entrepreneurlife #entrepreneurship

As a consumer, Barbara Paldus was disappointed by the lack of rigor in the clean beauty and wellness segment. As an investor, she’s intent on making sure the segment is more credible.
