Sojourn in MILIEU FALL 2025 featured home by Ray Booth where he serves as both architect and interior designer
Recognizing the beauty of his client’s five-acre Forest Hills property and her wishes to accommodate a houseful of family and friends, Booth designed a streamlined version of a Georgian brick house that’s linked to a trio of contemporary white structures by window-lined passageways with elegant interiors and views of surrounding landscape

Restraint, when it's the right choice, makes a room feel full.
I imagined this room in plan and what it looked onto before we made any decisions. The window would have a view overlooking a creek that ran along side it. My job was simply to honor that. The draperies are punctuation... a place for the eye to pause before it arrives.

I've been thinking about what this work is actually for...
Not designing beautiful rooms. I know how to do that. The thing underneath it. Why someone would spend a life asking other people what they love, what they're afraid of, what they most want to feel when they walk through their own front door. The practice of knowing someone before you make anything for them.
I designed our home in Provincetown the way I design for clients. Sat with the questions. Turned them on myself. It turns out they're harder when the answers are yours to live with.
But that practice, I think, is one of the most human things I can do. We live in a world that is getting very good at producing things without asking... at finishing without listening... at optimizing the experience before anyone has had it.
The home is the one place that still resists that. It still insists on knowing you. On being made for you, not for the category of person you might be.
That feels important right now. Some mornings it feels like the most important thing there is.

We think of windows as a kind of invitation. A constant pull toward what waits outside.

Architecture is how I see. The site is always where it begins.
This home is the fifth project I've done with my client, and the second from the ground up. By now, an incredibly deep trust and knowing has rooted. She brings what she loves. I find where it wants to live.
Finding this site, rooted close to downtown historic Southhampton with mature Japanese maples, led us to believe that all of the things she loves could be contained in her new home here.

Love to MAMA … BETTY BOO AT 92!!! ….and all Mama’s… may we remember the unconditional love they can teach us and share with one another…. always! ❤️❤️❤️
Walk through the front door of this Victorian-era home and you see sunshine running all the way through. I held that feeling from the beginning on this one, and let it make every other decision.

The porch was the stick in the dirt on this one.
Every project has one. The first decision that makes all the other decisions possible. On this Southampton property, it was the porch. Mike Kaiser, the landscape architect, and I kept calling it the knuckle. Once I understood that the porch was the spine, I knew where everything else went.
The pool house sits in conversation with the main house across the landscape. So does the old barn we transformed into a gathering pavilion. Nothing on this property was placed without first asking how it related to everything else. That's not an aesthetic exercise. It's how a compound becomes a compound instead of a collection of buildings.
Understanding the why creates the what.

When I have the honor of sitting as both the architectural and the interior designer, everything forms from the same listening:
How the chandelier relates to the volume above it, where the console wants to live. Those things take shape, long before the interiors begin.
My client came to me carrying a life. Italian pieces, things from Paris, textiles from Morocco and India. I wanted to build the vessel that would receive all of it properly. Silk wall covering. Soft linens and chenilles against the deep purples and fuchsias she'd spent years finding.
There was a version of this house that could have been very loud. I loved that we arrived at this one instead.

I wanted this one to be a quiet promise. A home that knew a sense of place, but didn't dress like the postcard of where it was. The discipline I keep returning to in Palm Beach is the one of refusal... of letting the setting do most of the talking... of building something the landscape can hold without strain.
Less blooms into more. Out here especially!
