I drew ten desert flora found in AlUla. This one was quite challenging, given the structure of these desert plants. Lots of spindly leaves and tiny blooms and berries.

Working on The Wonder of Life on Earth has been a great (and at times tumultuous) journey of making art, not unlike the story of life itself as it unfolds in these pages. Illustrating such a vast range of subjects was no easy feat. I’m used to drawing things visible to the naked eye—flora and fauna—but this project stretched my imagination in ways that changed both my work and the way I approach illustration.
It felt a little like being back in school—relearning bacteria, jawless fish, and dinosaurs—and occasionally spiraling into existential questions about how everything had to happen just so for us to be here. “What will happen in a billion years?” I wondered as I drew the swirls of a red giant for the final chapter.
I am honoured, grateful, and deeply proud to have worked on this book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed drawing it.
