It’s a waiata that brings our oral traditions of Pepeha, of speaking life into our foundations, our place to stand, where we come from and where we belong into the vibe and style of today. In our Pepeha, we acknowledge our sacred mountains, our rivers, our tribal territories and our tribal affiliations in a way that binds us to our people and our environment. When we share our Pepeha we share who we are and those we belong to. We created this song together with the guidance of our tuakana @tipenemusic to encourage our people to re-engage with our Pepeha, to walk our whenua, to dive in our moana, climb our maunga and swim our awa. It was chanted by our people as we crossed the Auckland Harbour Bridge and again as we marched through the streets of Wellington. Rather than putting our energy AGAINST what we don’t want, it’s and AFFIRMATION of our power, of our drive, of our vision and our collective energy as we move forward TOGETHER and actively create our Hawaiki Hou. Kiritai | Auckland Art Gallery @aucklandartgallery E mihi nui ana ki ngā taiohi me ō rātou kaiako, otirā ki te whānau o Kiritai i Auckland Art Gallery. I just finished giving a kōrero at Kiritai, an education programme, working with rangatahi from schools across Tāmaki that invited them into Auckland Art Gallery to teach them skills and give them experiences to help them shape, an exhibition that they will hold in the Auckland Art Gallery in the coming months. I shared with them my journey as a photographer along with some of my life and business hacks, life lessons and tips that helped me get to where I am in my life. Ko te tūmanako i whai hua ngā kōrero ki ngā tauira, ā, ka āwhina i a rātou, i a rātou e takahi nei i tō rātou ara whakamua. I also spoke about creating art that “means something”. Not just chasing likes, not just making stuff that looks cool, but creating whakaahua, visual art, songs and other creative expressions that mean something, that tell a story, that move people or inspire emotion or thought. It was cool to have the opportunity to share these kōrero with these rangatahi and it makes me think back to when I was at school and I wish I had someone share these yarns with me back then. Hari huringa tau my love 💛 9 seconds. There were many a 9-second funnies shared on Saturday night (iykyk) ēngari kei te kōrero pono ahau, 9-seconds was all it took for me to realise you were my person, my safety, my tinoooo. Two years ago, on your birthday actually, we met, and every second, minute, hour, day, week and month ever since has been filled with nothing less than adventure, laughter, growth, support, desire, and of course, kaupapa 😂 And the reason I’m sharing this now is because, when put on the spot to speak, I couldn’t find the words to express how grateful I am to love you.
