Earlier this year I got to perform alongside my good friends and well know artists
@remy1fatman @reganbalzerarts @horyfulla13 in a show called Ihirangaranga at the Auckland Town Hall - It’s a unique, improvised show, a 90 minute freestyle of sorts, weaving live large scale painting, tāonga puoro, soundscape and spoken word, less for entertainment more an experience.
This particular poem in the show is called Ngākau - a piece I scribed for a poetic film by the same name alongside a dear friend
@lil_manu_888 whom without their insight, generosity of story, honesty and direction, these words would’ve never came to be. I should also mention, the influence of Hine Pu Te Hue in bringing Ngākau to life, her Oro, her story, her ability to transmute, transform and birth a sound from which life can flourish will forever ground, inspire and teach me.
I’m proud of this poem, of its message and call to remembrance, I often laugh and say in listening; “it’s 8 minutes of your life you won’t get back” but if I’m being honest, it’s 8 minutes of life given back to you, as a seed to carry on in pursuit of fullness, with the creative heart alive, growing and providing a centre for ‘knowing yourself’, in all you do.
Te Whatumanawa
Te Manawa
Te Pūmanawa
Ngākau in its fullness.
