a painting for my host mom (Gastmutter) this was very fun & my first time consistently painting outside. i would really recommend if you have the chance, especially if there is a nice covered area you can consistently work in! i gave it to her & an hour later she gave me socks she knit for me! that was maybe the best surprise of my life :) my friend julian put this song on a playlist for me & I do like it very much

amsterdam & outdoor climbing, new places make new thoughts (that is so wonderful) having beautiful places and ppl around makes being behind a camera pretty easy

finally done! yay! initially was gonna b a secret christmas present & transitioned into a long project tht was certainly not secret i wanted to try a million new stitches on this, embroidery isn’t my main so it was fun to experiment so much. mostly made the place up & sort of came up with buildings as i went. since this was for cameron i wanted to make a building that looked a bit like the library and i thought a bar could be cute.

listened to a lot of stereolab making this fella. this guy was a big ole experiment, excuse to try fun things, chill painting. things i did: sgraffito, actually a ceramic technique where you scratch through the surface layer and show a different colored layer. this is in the sky decalcomania, i’m still trying to get this one right, it’s essentially pressing a piece of paper onto the paint to get a texture out of it, i did this for the grass. sponging, exactly what it sounds like! can’t remember the name but i also pressed in textured items to the paint to get more fun feelings in it, it’s the most obvious in the little gray bridge but i also did it for building texture. i’ll have another post with the progress shots of him!

a series of sketches, rules are: you have to make a bunch of bad art before you make anything good! realized in painting classes that i really need to work on my drawing skills so this is me doing just that, tried to draw everything live which is pretty tough when you are trying to draw a bar during march madness (nice job houston!) flip to the end to see ‘abundance’ in @writethatdown.mag !!! very cool to b featured among such incredible artists!

this chair. today i did not bring my second coffee to class. life is pain, i got a chai later: success! i spend a lot of class trying to make things look the way i think we are supposed to, which is cool but since these are one day projects it’s hard to feel like i ever make something really awesome. anyways this chair was stressful to walk in and see. if you think you want to paint a chartreuse folding chair, you may be a masochist!

glazing color! this was tough, lots of “shit i had a perfectly good painting before i decided to add color” this was an value (black & white) painting from a few weeks ago that we glazed over with color. essentially diluting oil paints a ton and layering over the existing painting. i LOVE using linseed oil to dilute paint, so i had a blast, but had to work through a lot of phases where i thought i ruined it.

it’s a guy! this one was fun mostly cuz the early stage was so creepy i didn’t even want it in my room. there are always so many things i would change but, my painting teacher said, “you should quit when it says what you want it to say,” & she is in charge. what i wanted this painting to say was ideally something that sounded like the song clouds by cibo matto things i tried: less linseed oil, glazing, dry brushing, leaving things alone

this painting is from class again! no white paint in this, i used the solvent to remove paint and show raw canvas, which creates highlights and can be a way to emphasize parts of a painting! class is hard but everyone is really nice & i’m learning a ton. i talked to my instructor about Remedios Varo this week which was cool and i got some ideas for exciting textures and things i can add to my work! this was the kind of week when i got home and started working on my projects right away. i have a personal project that’s about 3/4 finished so expect a post in the next couple weeks with my biggest guy yet!
