The Sky Knows I Exist
@bitsofnaaz and I made an album together! Needless to say I’m mega grateful for the inspiring experience being in the studio, writing songs with Naaz from scratch and doing productional stuff while creating. Here’s a lil vid/photo dump of the creation process.
1. Cover art made by @mikejurrien
2. Happy face when the album was finished!
3. First time Naaz played ‘Everything I Am’. The version on the album was a live take in which we recorded the performance with a lot of room microphones.
4. Naaz not singing in a mic, but barking in the room.
5. Working hard, with E.T. the co writer on the record.
6. Distorted spring of the space echo is one of the vibey-est sounds in the world. It all over the record.
7. One of the 50 overdubs for the title track. Naaz moved and walked a lot around the stereo room mics for some natural panning effects.
8. We experimented a bit with cassette field recording. We even did some takes outside!
9. Lol
SIREN the EP is out!!!!!!
There’s so much I want to say about this project, but more about that later. First - we celebrate!
Again, incredibly beautiful artwork by @ninaagbele
And a special thank you to my musical husband @rasperjas for helping me find my voice and being ever so patient with me.
STREAM SIREN
I wanted to show you how we made bark because it was literally written in one take!!
Slide 1: Jasper had a new tape recorder and sampled some random piano noodles on it. You can hear me ask 4 times if we can use it as the intro :D Slide 2: First voice memo of the day. I was feeling odd because of people (autism things) and wanted to improv to understand my feelings. I asked for beautiful chords lol and this is what came out instantly. Slide 3: We decided the improvisation was magical so I immediately tried to copy it for the official recording. I did not change any lyrics. Only some notes. The lyrics and melodies of bark were my first instinct :) Slide 4: Jasper recorded the guitar through headphones???!!! Slide 5/6: Wrote down the improvised lyrics, changed a few words and done. We only had 20 minutes left in the studio for verse 2 so I wrote poetry style and improvised the melody behind the mic. It became one of my favorite verses ever. Slide 7: Recording with my little notebook :D You can hear me flip the page at 00:55 Slide 8: Next session I wanted chorus 2 to break open. Jasper grabbed his toy sax. It sounds weird but it made it into the song if you listen closely. Barking instruments!! Slide 9: Luckily @rouzbeh_esfand was down to record real sax!!!!! Slide 10: Safe to say we were mesmerized <3 Slide 11: After playing it live I felt we needed more energy so we recorded diabolical backing vocals HAHAHA Slide 12: More backing vocals but never into the microphone. We sing into the room and let stereo mics record it all. Makes everything sound so cool Slide 13: I was tired and fell asleep on ET. He sent me melodies through telepathy xx Slide 14: Time to mix :D Jasper did most of it but I sat next to him and shared every idea. It feels so good working with someone who loves the song like you do <3 Slide 15: When the sound waves started looking like dogs we knew the song was finished :) Slide 16: I barked with joy. My favorite song ever. The headbanging hurt my neck tho!!!
I hope you liked our making of!!
Do not forget to bark <3
xx Naaz
