Boxing Day (Dec 26th), Little London, Westmoreland, Jamaica — 2024 On my most recent trip to Jamaica, my family and I stayed in Little London on the southwest coast of the island. My family roots are in the hills of Trelawney, so even though I’ve visited many times, this part of the island was new to me. Our taxi driver, Granville, casually mentioned an annual drag racing event happening a short drive away. I grew up aware of Jamaican car culture, but I had no idea there was such a thriving drag racing community here so I had to see what it was all about. After securing a grounds pass, I spent the day documenting what I could — teams rebuilding seemingly ordinary cars into machines capable of unimaginable speeds. The ingenuity, discipline, and community behind it all was incredible. These are a few images from that day. I’ll be sharing more from the series — and I look forward to returning & continuing to document & learn more about the people and stories behind this community.

Had the amazing opportunity to photograph six restaurants for Pete Wells’ “The 100 Best Restaurants in New York City in 2024” feature in the New York Times. Thank you to the NYT photo team as well as the restaurants Tatiana, Houseman, the Village Cafe, Trinciti Roti, Hyderabadi Zaiqa & Laghman Express!

It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted here-nearly 4 years with the exception of posting a story here & there. I’m excited to begin sharing what I’ve been up to on a more regular basis again but would like to take a moment to address my hiatus. Shortly after my last post in 2020, I moved back home to be with my sister Paula as she bravely faced advanced brain cancer, and I’m grateful that I was able to spend every day with her until she passed in April of 2021. Paula was so talented, loving, & uniquely humorous. She is so dearly missed by myself & everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. I simply could not return to posting here without acknowledging her first, no matter how long it took me to do so. Before her passing, Paula wrote an amazing children’s book, How to Hurry up…Slowly, which we have made available for purchase & we have also established the Paula J. Smith scholarship fund in her memory in collaboration with the Eliot school of Fine & Applied Arts(@eliotschoolcraft ) in our hometown of Jamaica Plain, MA. Proceeds from her book sales go directly to her scholarship fund which benefits vital arts programming for young Bostonians. Links to Paula’s scholarship fund & her book are in my bio if you would like to learn more information or support in any way ❤️
