My thirties sat me down and reassured me that it’s never been a gimmick. I really am who I shyed away from being all those prior years. I was never in alignment shying away from my voice, my vision, my autonomy. Now you can’t truck me how bold I’m running towards those things. Bring it on. Whatever, whenever. Get up, move some weight, move some furniture, move around that energy. You are boundless. You are awe-inspired. You are Glorious young man and young woman.

Flint surprised me.
Not because of what it lacked — but because of what it held.
The kind of joy that lives around dinner tables and porch lights.
The kind of pride you can taste in the barbecue.
The kind of art that doesn’t wait for permission.
I came to witness how others were doing —
because it’s too easy to only measure the world by your own walls.
And as Marianne Williamson says,
“A shift in perception is a miracle.”
Mine came around the table.

This weekend in Atlanta, walking through Amy Sherald’s work, reminded me that we artists need to see art, and we need to see each other. As someone who lives and travels to absorb it all these moments truly do feed me. I can feel “Rakimism” expanding — not just in my art, but the journey that shapes it. I want to bring you into that world: the travels, the residencies I hope to land, and the art I see that shifts my perspective. Each trip is a part of my process.

Some of this started before I even knew what style was.
I grew up around grown men that dressed like the day mattered. Hard bottom shoes by the door. Cologne in the air. Watches with weight to them. Women too. Everybody carried themselves with intention.
Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to spaces like Tweeds and the details that come with them. Mike’s built something in Riverside that feels connected to occasion, presentation and the stories people carry into different seasons of life.
