An 1890’s cottage under waves of change and once home to the mason’s union is made relevant for the 21st c. – compact, functional, and adaptable. Material resources in terms of embodied energy/carbon and with respect to cultural significance drive the ethic and the design language. The renovation reinforces a dense historic neighborhood close to the city center, counteracting sprawl and supporting low-energy modes of transportation. An attached ADU with its own entry increases housing options and affordability in an area with limited availability. The project incl. vehicle charging is all-electric, surpassing 2030 benchmarks for delivered energy to existing buildings and exceeding the 2030 target for existing buildings. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to tour the grounds, structures and furniture of the late master George Nakashima. I have never seen so much walnut lumber in one place in my life. Such an inspiring place to visit. An unexpected treat was that they invite you sit on the furniture at each stop along the tour. A nice touch! #georgenakashima

A bench with 5 drawers that sits across the room from the previously posted kitchen with same olive green furniture linoleum. Entry door with a vestibule made of Baltic birch. The door was not part of the original scope of this project. It was to be a refurbished door or a new door from a manufacturer. After challenges with both, a custom door reflecting the original was proposed. It turned out to be an excellent and exciting choice as the custom door mates precisely with the vestibule while providing any modern conveniences of a new door. The door and vestibule together make for such a special experience while entering this home. Proud to have been able to put them together.
