Join us for the next iteration of Re-Percussions, this time with sounds selected by very special guest, artist and life model, @buitumelo (B.U.I) kotekwa whose practice echoes themes of temporal fracture, nguni cosmology and being a londoner.
B.U.I’s session will serve and live as a reminder of the ways blackness is, and the ways we are connected despite location. They invite you to come and listen with space & time in mind while we participate in the undoing of genre. They say “i’d like this set to operate as a system of veneration, a sentimentality i’ve come to associate with studio twelve. i think genres melting and melding is shaping a lot of us into guardians with all sorts of boundaries being built. i don’t think music comes with rules but i’m very accepting and excited about my role as a guardian of certain sounds and histories. i take that s*** serious”
Since it’s a Friday, the evening continues with cocktails and music from Barby & Rabz after the session. What better combination for a perfect Friday night in South London? Ticket link in bio!

Barby and Rabz present RE-PERCUSSIONS as an invitation to gather, to listen deeply, and to follow the drum’s echoes—its histories and reverberations. It is a time for listening, study, conversation, an opening to exploring unexpected connections, returns and resonances.
A couple music related things for you to engage with this week 🎧🔊🪩
1 - Listen back to my recent show on @voices_radio for a jump around the electronic music traditions of the African Diaspora, from South African House to St Lucian Dennery to Black British Grime, Angolan & Portuguese Kuduro & Beyond. Find it on my soundcloud!
2 - Join myself & @barby_as tomorrow evening for another Re-Percussions Listening session at @thestudiotwelve_ , this time with special guest @midnightroba playing her new music, influences & even a little live vocal for us. Low cost £5 & Supporter tickets are available! (Videos from the last session which was my Liberation Songs sonic lecture)
3 - Come dance at @glint.ldn on Friday, very excited to be playing alongside @lvis1990@k_o_r_a_n_t_e_m_m_a@budalagi & glint founder (& sweetheart who I’ve been blessed to know since teenage times) @s.hivum ! (Video from the last time I played @thecarpetshop.peckham with the @prestigepakuk loves!)
Glint 003 artist: Rabz
We’re very excited to welcome DJ, curator and ex-Balamii host Rabz to the Glint decks. Rabz co-founded @wetldn - South London’s consistently sold out music-focused club night for d*kes that has boasted easily some of the best lineups LDN has seen in recent years.
Through their DJ sets, Rabz takes the listener on a soulful and lively multi-genre journey through the bass-led percussion-heavy corners of club sounds from across the African Diaspora. Expect to hear a seamless blend of UK Funky, Kuduro, Grime, Gqom, House and beyond.
In addition to their many creative ventures, Rabz also works as a PT - if your favourite DJ got dench, it’s likely because of them. We met way back in our teens, and when training together recently, I had to repeatedly pause to ID the music soundtracking our sessions. It feels very correct to have them part of Glint’s third edition.
Dress to sweat. Tears in the club encouraged.

This month’s session on Barby has invited vocalist and producer MidnightRoba to share tracks from her new album Raise a Symphony and some of the music that inspires her.
MidnightRoba is the sobriquet of vocalist, songwriter and producer Roba El Essawy. She was the voice of electronic music trio Attica Blues and now produces her own music released independently on Sonder Records. Her latest album Raise A Symphony takes its name from Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, presenting 15-tracks of music and vocals for our times. Roba’s poetic and deeply considered song writing explores colonialism to complicity of silence; from compromised politicians to the power of protest and gratitude to those on the frontlines of change. From displacement, migration, the desire to protect our loved ones and the need for kindness and to have faith in the future, Roba invites listeners to consider the importance of searching for joy amongst the all-encompassing despair. This album, a labour of deep love also features contributions from Saul Williams, Deschanel Gordon, Tony Kofi and others.

The next Re-Percussions is here! Join me for a deep listening session exploring the role of music in Black radical politics and movements towards liberation. It’s been 4 months of helping people lift heavy things for a living & it’s going well! Surpassed my goal amount of clients, coaching regular classes & get to spend my days with some very sweet folks and help them to get stronger, move better, feel more embodied & transcend their expectations of themselves. Life change paying off!😌
Resolution season is here & I have a few spaces available for ongoing 1:1 personal training (where I work directly with you over time on a personalised progressive programme catered to your specific goals), 2:1 training (if you want to train with a friend, partner or loved one) and plenty of space for online coaching (with personalised workouts and support for your solo gym or home workout journey).
If you’re a beginner who wants to get into lifting but feel intimidated or don’t know where to start, you can also book in for an introductory course of 6-8 weeks in person, to get into a habit, learn a range of exercises & perfect your form so you can head into the gym on your own with confidence
