Tucked into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, this midcentury-influenced home blurs the line between indoors and out. Designed by RAAD Studio architect James Ramsey, the 9,800-square-foot residence contrasts bold architectural gestures with whimsical, secret spaces.
To bring the interior to life, Ramsey collaborated with designer Cathleen Gruver of Gruver Cooley, who infused the home with personality—from a trap door in the primary bedroom leading to the indoor pool to a starry-night ceiling in the steam room and a living roof. “Together, we created something that feels really special and fun to live in.”

Black corian stair, floor to ceiling, spiraling through a Tribeca duplex that had no windows in the back. So we lofted the center instead and let the double-height space do the work. White concrete below, Dinesen wide plank above, glass-enclosed fireplace in between.. 🚀

Coexistence over resistance. Built on a stretch of Jersey Shore reshaped by Hurricane Sandy, this project began not with the building but with what was lost: the original dune-scape, formed over centuries by air and water. Restoring those natural forms lifted the house and created a path for water to move through the site rather than against it. Two simple volumes, built humbly with the time-tested materials and techniques that have been the vernacular for generations. 🦀

Two crumbling townhouses, stitched together, gutted to bedrock, and rebuilt over five years into something so rare it barely has a category.
