13/11/1943 - 20/03/2026
Today, we come together to honour and celebrate the life of our beloved Nanna, Mary Joyce Pearson — a woman whose strength, love, and spirit touched so many lives.
Nanna Mary’s story is one of resilience and courage. As a member of the Stolen Generations, she endured hardships that many of us can only begin to imagine. Yet through it all, she rose with grace and strength, becoming Australia’s first Indigenous classical ballet dancer for the WA Ballet Company — a remarkable achievement and a testament to her determination and talent.
But beyond her accomplishments, Nanna Mary was the heart of our family.
She was a mother to her three children — Glenn, Kim, and David — and a guiding light to her nine grandchildren: Kira, Kirstein, Rachael, Trisha, Natalie, Ryan, Joshua, Kylee, and Lauren. She didn’t just love us — she raised us, stood beside us, and was involved in every step of our lives. She was our protector, our teacher, and our biggest supporter.
Nanna was a rock not only for our family, but for her community. So many people leaned on her, and she always gave her time, her strength, and her love without hesitation. Her presence brought comfort, her voice brought wisdom, and her spirit brought people together.
We take comfort in knowing she is no longer in pain. We imagine her now — dancing again, free and joyful — reunited with Uncle David, Aunty Dulcie, Uncle Des, her mum, and her dad.
We are deeply grateful to her son, who made sure that the remainder of her time on this earth was filled with love, care, and dignity.
Nanna Mary’s legacy lives on through all of us — her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Her love is woven into who we are, and it will continue to guide us every day.
Nanna Mary Joyce Pearson, we love you more than words can say. We will miss you deeply — in our homes, in our hearts, and in our lives. But we know you are finally at peace.
Fly high, our little songbird. You are finally free.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our Nanna Mary.
