I had the pleasure of designing the merch for @grpridefestival@grandrapidspridecenter this year!
This illustration particularly I’m so so proud of—queer people must know the origins that began Pride as we know it and why we celebrate Pride today!
The marches for queer rights in the 70s were a result of police attacks on the community, such as the Stonewall Riots and the Weinstein Hall Occupation. Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson formed STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to advocate for queer rights, but disbanded when Pride festivals neglected the trans community in their celebrations (using “gay rights” instead of “LGBT+ rights,” and ignoring the struggles facing the trans community such as homelessness, police brutality, and racism). Trans women of color were the originators of the Pride movement and queer resistance! And this is just a small synopsis of queer history!
This illustration asks you to know how Pride began, to educate yourself on the history of our community advocacy, and understand why we celebrate Pride today ⚧️💖✨

Just want to say for International SW Rights Day a big “THANK YOU” to all of the SWs in the world! Today (and always) we celebrate the resilience of SWs, to show solidarity with all individuals in all varieties of SW, acknowledge the atrocities and stigma that face the SW community, and to advocate for the rights that should protect SW as a legitimate form of labor ☂️
My illustrations are directly influenced by SWs, and I cannot tell you how sweet and amazing the folks in my direct life have been to me, and have helped to educate me on the complexities of the SW industry. From dancers to doms, from street to studio, you all deserve safety and security for the work you do. I love you so so much and am thankful for your contributions to art, culture, and activism!
