A huge congratulations to PRISM member @tomhulme87 , who has just published his book ‘Belfastmen: An Intimate History of Life Before Gay Liberation’!
“My book reconstructs the lives of men who had sex with men from the late 19th century to the 1950s, from cruising the city centre for sex and reading homosexual novels to navigating the tolerance offered by their families and neighbourhoods.
“I grew up in Britain and moved here for a job at Queen’s in 2016. I am a proudly gay man and have long been interested in our history. Writing this book - the first of its kind - was my attempt to learn more about my new home and to give something back to the LGBT community too.”
When asked how it felt to see the book in stores around Belfast, Tom said it was “exciting and terrifying!”
“Academics are used to their work being read only by other academics, so the knowledge that anyone might walk in and pick up a copy is new to me. I just hope they enjoy reading Belfastmen as much as I did writing it!”

PRISM is proud to present Kaleidoscope Cabaret, a night of live LGBTQIA+ performances to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on May 15th.
This two hour event will be held at @qftbelfast , and will include performances from @chubbbyycat , @vampyr.bat , @georgehoustonarts and @zmameadows , with @dick_von_dyke on hosting duties.

Proud to have marched along with hundreds in Belfast for trans rights today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
It was incredible to see so many people take a stand against the rolling back of trans rights, and it was inspiring to hear the speakers talk about how allies can show their support for the trans and non binary communities 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
