This Thursday 4/16 Quality Film Club presents Dark Star, John Carpenter's gloriously scrappy, stoner-philosopher space comedy where the future of humanity is entrusted to a crew of bored idiots drifting through the cosmos with a ship full of talking bombs. Not only is it Carpenter’s debut, it’s a collaboration with his film school classmate Dan O’Bannon, who went on to script Alien (1979) and direct Return of the Living Dead (1985). It’s an endlessly inventive film that looks like a million bucks–on a budget of $60,000. Not just phenomenal; it will teach you phenomenology. Oh my GAWD- all you fools are so freaking special. This is what it’s all about. Together we ‘mocked the system’. We showed up, we came undone, we picked each other up (literally), and this COMMUNITY is how we stay alive.
