Did you know that our compost program has been operating for over 30 years? Launched in 1993 as part of the New York City Compost Project, it is the longest-running mid-scale community composting site in NYC!
Swipe through to see some photos of our site now and then.
Interested in getting involved and getting your hands dirty? We’re always looking for volunteers. Visit queensbotanical.org/community-volunteer/ to learn more.
Shoutout to the interns from @qbgcompost who came and visited us at Know Waste Lands! We got some much needed processing, windrow building, and sifting done with all of you there with us 🙌🏼
We can't wait for you all to visit again 🫶🏽

Come say hi! 👋 We’re giving away 150 countertop food scraps containers (courtesy of @nyczerowaste ) to make it easier to participate by either taking your scraps to one of the community drop-off sites that are scattered throughout #nyc or by using the @nycsanitation brown bin program. Both are great ways to reduce waste! 🌱♻️
We’ll also have info about our Compost Site Tours, Master Composter Workshops, and all the awesome summer events we’ve got coming up. (Hint: outdoor movie night 🎬 on Saturday, August 2!)
💌 Sign up for our newsletter at the event and get two passes (while supplies last)!
This week, the QBG Compost Team had the pleasure of providing technical assistance to @southjamaicainfinitygarden in @nycspeakeradams ' district.
We helped stabilize their barrel compost tumbler, which we built for them during a previous outreach program. If your #queens -based community garden needs any technical support, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help! 🌱

Our Compost Build Community Volunteer days are back in full swing for 2025! Join us every Monday from 9:30am–12pm for our weekly compost build at @queensbotanicalgarden
You'll gain hands-on experience building a compost windrow using food scraps and horticultural waste collected from drop-off sites throughout Queens and from QBG.
Volunteers will help empty food scrap bins and chop food scraps, learn about making a balanced compost recipe, and assist in maintaining a tidy and clean site, all while spending time outside, having great conversation, and making a positive impact on the environment!
Click the link in our bio to register and get more info.
See you there! 🌱
Hey Kew Gardens! We've got some exciting news! 🌱
There’s a new food scrap drop-off site in our neighborhood hosted by @kewgardenscsa at Kew Gardens Cinema Park (on Austin Street/Lefferts Blvd, behind the theater). Stop by with your food scraps on Sundays between 10am-1pm.
All food scraps will be processed by Queens Botanical Garden’s compost team to create nutrient-rich compost!
A couple of things to remember:
🌱Compostable bags are fine, just please don't double them up.
🌱No plastic items like forks, spoons, or plastic bags, please!
Spread the word and see you next Sunday! 🌿
