11 years ago on this day we were able to reconnect and the timing was perfect. Yeah it took me 8 years to get on that good knee and lock it all the way down! Loving you is easy because you’re beautiful inside and out! Today we celebrate 3 years of marriage and 11 years together. Erika White (@punch1124 ), born and raised in Seattle’s Central District, is known as the Godmother of Seattle hip hop. Before conquering the scene, she graduated from Garfield High School in 1987, played on the varsity women’s state championship team, and began developing her skills on the mic through freestyling at school.
In 1990, under her alias Kylea, she co-founded Jasiri Media Group, serving up wisdom and rhymes through her group Beyond Reality. With a full length, a live record, and a 12” split with Source of Labor, Beyond Reality fused soulful melodies with razor-sharp lyricism and carved out space for women in Seattle’s hip hop movement.
Erika was a regular presence at Sureshot Sundays, a weekly workshop and jam session hosted at the iconic Sit & Spin. DJs, dancers, emcees, and fans came together each Sunday at the cafe-slash-club-slash-laundromat to build something bigger than themselves.
Today, Seattle’s Godmother of hip hop still reigns, remaining a dominant force in the Central District, bringing southern comfort to the community with @fatschicken .
