Have you heard?🐇 It's official, the top five most frequently seen mammals in 2025, according to our Living With Mammals survey, were hedgehogs, grey squirrels, foxes, mice and bats! 🦇 But, the data also showed us that rabbit sightings are continuing to decline in our urban spaces, echoing the decline we're seeing in the countryside. 🐇📉 Could you help us keep count? Register to take part in our survey #LivingWithMammals today and tell us what mammals you see locally 👇Link in bio ptes.org/lwm 📸H J Davies|shutterstock.com #rabbit #spring #survey #volunteer #citizenscience #hedgehog #citywildlife #biodiversity #ptes #bringingthewildbacktolife

Today is #EndangeredSpeciesDay 🌎 At People’s Trust for Endangered Species, we want to remind you of something vital: extinction is not inevitable🐾 Almost two-thirds of UK species have declined over the last 50 years, and thousands more face threats globally. But there is a real opportunity for us to turn the tide on these statistics. From the British countryside to the furthest corners of our earth, PTES is on the ground making a difference. This year alone, our incredible community is working hard to protect beloved hazel dormice, European hedgehogs and the ancient woodlands and hedgerows they call home. Across the globe we've worked to protect over 230 threatened species in more than 70 countries, from the unique Bilbo’s rain frog in South Africa to Irrawaddy dolphins in Cambodia. 🌍💚 True conservation doesn’t just happen it takes all of us to play our part in saving our natural world. Here is how you can take action with us today: 1️⃣ Become a Hedgehog Champion: Join over 130,000 volunteers making their gardens wildlife-friendly 2️⃣ Take part in a survey: Help us monitor local mammals or log your local sightings to provide the vital scientific data we need to protect them 3️⃣ Support our worldwide projects: Hit the link in our bio to donate to our latest wildlife appeals 👉 Click the link in our bio to find a wildlife survey near you or to support our vital conservation grants. 📸Stephen Morris, Jihosuo Biswas, Kozma94|shutterstock, I Kuehn|shutterstock, Christopher Morgan, Andrew Walmsley #PTES #EndangeredSpeciesDay2026 #WildlifeConservation #SaveOurSpecies #UKWildlife #HedgehogStreet #bringingthewildbacktolife

The sound of summer arriving 🚁🌤️ 🔊 Volume up to hear the buzz! Adult stag beetles emerge between May and August, and warm evenings in June and July are often the best time to spot them. 😎 They're the UK’s largest beetle, and even though they're very majestic, they're also famously clumsy in flight. Listen out for their distinctive helicopter wings on a balmy evening, an unmistakable sound! If you see an adult stag beetle, a larva, or even a dead beetle, please record it through our #GreatStagHunt 👉 ptes.org/gsh (🔗you can find the link in our bio!) Every sighting helps us understand where these remarkable insects are living. 💚 🎞️Andy Waller #stagbeetle #citzenscience #wildlife #springtime

A spring in your step 🦊💕 For wildlife, spring sounds the buzzing, blossoming start of the year: the business of foraging, courting, chasing off rivals, and bringing up a brood, starts now. And some are quicker off their marks than others... Hedgehogs emerge from hibernation in spring, regain weight, and begin elaborate courtship rituals. Bats mate in autumn, delay fertilisation through winter, and raise their pups in spring and early summer. Foxes on the other hand, having given birth to litters in March, are already nursing their playful cubs👇Link in bio 🔗ptes.org/a-spring-in-your-step #LivingWithMammals 🦊 ptes.org/lwm 📸Ronald Rampsch | shutterstock.com #fox #cubs #wildlife #spring #nature #volunteering #citizenscience #ptes #bringingthewildbacktolife

Working together to help hedgerows thrive 🌳 At People's Trust for Endangered Species, we're helping hedgerows thrive, working at every level to protect and restore hedgerows. So, what do we get up to? Well... We run hands-on workshops for farmers, sharing practical skills to manage hedgerows for wildlife and productivity.👩‍🌾 🏛️ We provide expert advice to policy makers to help shape strong, effective hedge policies (national support is key!) We support researchers and their studies into hedgerow ecology, carbon storage, and wider environmental benefits.🔬 🦔 We also partner with wildlife groups to support both nature and farming communities. 📱 And for everyone we have a FREE Healthy Hedgerows app that puts expert advice in your pocket! With 70,000 hedgerows already surveyed, it could be the largest hedge survey ever. Together, we’re building healthier hedgerows for wildlife, farming, and the future.🌍 ptes.org/hedgerow/ #NationalHedgerowWeek 🌳The Tree Council 📸Cumbria Connect, Friends of the Lake District, Megan Gimber

🌿 Hedgerows matter now more than ever 🐝 Hedgerows aren’t just part of the countryside, they’re a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. 🌱 They store carbon and older hedgerows can lock up more carbon per hectare than forests! 🌦️ They help farms cope with extreme weather, from heatwaves to heavy rain 🐝 They’re vital for wildlife, boosting biodiversity across farmland And for farmers, hedgerows are like natural infrastructure: 🐄 Providing shade and shelter for livestock 🍎 Protecting crops by creating stable microclimates 💧 Managing water, slowing floods, improving soil absorption, and storing moisture for dry periods In a world facing both climate change and biodiversity loss, hedgerows offer a simple, effective solution. Help us protect the ones we have and plant new ones in the right places. These changes will have a big impact for farming, nature, and our future. #NationalHedgerowWeek ptes.org/hedgerow/hedgerows-and-climate-change @thetreecouncil #hedges #carbon #climatechange #wildlife #farming #agriculture #nature #ptes #bringingthewildbacktolife 📸Megan Gimber, Tyto Alba

Why do we still use hedgerows? 🌳 With the ability to support over 2000 species, hedgerows boast irreplaceable value over modern alternatives of keeping the cows in; a home for pollinators, effective pest control, soil protection, and water infiltration to name a few. It's no surprise then that a whopping 97% of farmers in a recent survey considered their hedgerows an asset, and supporting wildlife and biodiversity recovery was listed as the most common motivation for planting new hedges. What's more, shade, shelter, and microclimate regulation are set to become essential as farms adapt to a changing climate. Hedges are now valued for the protection they offer against climate pressures, benefits that earlier generations may not have considered important. #NationalHedgerowWeek 🌳 @thetreecouncil #hedgerows #wildlife #farming #nature #climate #biodiversity #ptes #bringingthewildbacktolife

It's #NationalHedgerowWeek!🌳 As well as #HedgehogWeek we're also celebrating National Hedgerow Week! The British landscape is shaped by hundreds of thousands of miles of hedges - lines of actively managed trees and shrubs forming living boundaries and offering a wealth of other benefits. Healthy hedgerows provide wildlife with a sheltered and bountiful habitat network; protect agriculture, whether livestock or crops; and bring greenery, capture carbon, and deliver more than a little beauty to our rail lines and roadsides. While hedgerows have an identity in their own right, they are often overlooked and so, for National Hedgerow Week 2026, The Tree Council is reminding everyone that hedges are trees too! And that makes them equally, and enormously, valuable. We often think of hedges in their collective form but some of the UK’s most commonly found hedgerow species are also some of our best loved trees. #NationalHedgerowWeek has a particular focus on hawthorn this year – join one of @TheTreeCouncil 's free online talks to find out how you can help inform knowledge around its resilience, and the threats it faces. #hedgerows #wildlife #farming #nature #biodiversity #ptes #bringingthewildbacktolife
