What an incredible journey it was to bring the @1000handsart piece to Burning Man, where it stood as one of the tallest and most vibrant pieces of art this year.
I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to collaborate alongside an immensely talented and creative team, which made the entire experience even more enjoyable.
My primary role was the tech and lighting aspects, and I was thrilled to see it illuminate the dusty playa sky, visible all the way to esplanade!
It was a delightful engineering challenge, ensuring that the lighting and electrical system could withstand the harsh playa conditions, including alkali dust, rain, the tapestry's unpredictable movement with integrated lights, constraints of limited energy and budget, all while staying true to the artistic vision. For those interested in the technical details, the entire piece featured over 2500 individually addressable LEDs, organized into 12 power zones, 10 esp32 wled controllers, centrally coordinated using TouchDesigner over ArtNet, and the whole project was powered entirely with solar energy!
