Throwback to our Roundtable “Im/possible Paths to Bird Being” at the Multispecies Studio, KHM Cologne thanks to all who joined us, for your presence, openness, and thoughtful questions during the final discussion. You rise into the air. Yet this is neither freedom nor wildness; it is a fragile moment. You are vulnerable. Look down: imagine chickens scratching the ground, people digging themselves into the earth. You perceive utopian possibilities of cohabitation even within these dark and fractured landscapes. But you have no control. Your flight will end soon. For the exhibition “A Wing that was a Hand”, we are developing a dynamic flight simulation (continued in VR). Visitors experience a sense of fragility rather than exalted power. From above, they observe scenes on the ground. The flight is brief and ends rather unexpectedly. 𓆃 Du erhebst dich in die Luft. Doch dies ist weder Freiheit noch Wildheit; es ist ein zerbrechlicher Augenblick. Du bist verletzlich. Sieh nach unten: Stell dir Hühner beim Scharren vor, Menschen, die sich in die Erde graben. Du erkennst utopische Möglichkeiten des Zusammenlebens selbst in diesen dunklen und zerbrochenen Landschaften. Aber du hast keine Kontrolle. Dein Flug wird bald enden. Für die Ausstellung “A Wing that was a hand” entwickeln wir eine dynamische Flugsimulation (fortgesetzt in VR). Die Besucher*innen erleben ein Gefühl der Fragilität, nicht erhabener Macht. Von oben beobachten sie Szenen am Boden. Part of the VR environment in “A Wing that was a hand” is a nest switch, which is being developed using a procedural system in Houdini: organic and artificial nest building materials are used to create an individual, “walk-in” nest that reconfigures itself instantly. Branches, moss, plastic, cobwebs; a hybrid, virtual structure that reflects the functional decisions of falcons (Falconiformes) and their adaptation strategies in the Anthropocene. 𓅯 Fly in on December 18, 2025, to the Multispecies Studio at KHM Cologne for our roundtable discussion “Im/possible Paths to Bird Being” with artists Paula Strunden, Pascal Marcel Dreier, curator Leoni Fischer (Symbiotic Lab), 3D designer Nathan Schönewolf, and special guest Marjolein van der Loo. On Animals, Agency, and Archives PANEL DISCUSSION 11 December, 6–7 PM, Multispecies Studio, Academy of Media Arts (Heumarkt 14, 50667 Köln), free Admission. Following the OPEN SPACE-exhibition „Footprints on the Sands of Time“ in the context of @photoszene and „Artist Meets Archive #4“ in early 2025, where Polish artist Marta Bogdańska @marta.bogdanska presented works arising from her research with(in) the photographic collection of the Cologne City Museum – focused on more-than-human stories – she comes to Cologne again to talk together with artist and researcher Pascal Marcel Dreier @psclmd (Multispecies Storytelling, Academy of Media Arts), as well as Daria Bona @dariadebona (Internationale Photoszene) and Dr. Volker Hille (Head Graphische Sammlung KSM) about the role and potential of archives to critically revise a historiography that considers humanity to be the world’s most important element. The „Multispecies Storytelling“ professorship at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne investigates the question of how we can tell stories in such a way that humans are no longer the central focus. A Wing that was a Hand 👋🏼 Recap from our workshop at @kunsthochschulefuermedien last month where @vivianadefazio taught us to fly – without wings but with lots of sensitivity in our bodies and awareness for their movements in relation to each other🦇 The workshop is part of the research process for @paulastrunden and @psclmd ‘s new XR-production curated by @leoni504 @symbioticlab . The choreographer and dancer Viviana Defazio @vivianadefazio as well as the artists Pascal Marcel Dreier @psclmd and Paula Strunden @paulastrunden will guide through a series of exercises, that investigate orientation, trust and care. In parallel, XR sessions invite participants to envision and inhabit bird-like bodies, experimenting with eggs, nests, wings, claws and finally the sensation of flying. Together, we will weave these experiences into collective discussions on perception, imagination, and transformation. The event forms part of the artistic research project „A Wing That Was a Hand“ by Pascal Marcel Dreier and Paula Strunden, developed during Strunden’s media art fellowship (NRW Medienkunstfellow) at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
