Today, on #MotherEarthDay, the focus is on the innovations redefining our relationship with waste, industry and the environment. In Tanzania, cashew nut husks are often discarded or burned, contributing to pollution and wasted agricultural potential. Cecilia China at The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology nmaist_official _official is transforming this overlooked byproduct into a sustainable solution for one of the leather industry’s most pressing environmental challenges. The project extracts natural tannins from cashew husks and uses them as an eco-friendly alternative to chromium salts, toxic chemicals widely used in leather tanning that can severely impact both human health and surrounding water systems. By replacing hazardous materials with a scalable, locally accessible process, the innovation addresses two urgent issues at once: reducing industrial pollution and creating value from agricultural waste. Designed to support local SMEs, the technology also opens pathways for green jobs, particularly for women and youth, while strengthening circular economies in cashew-producing regions. A powerful example of how waste can become a resource, and how local innovation can help build cleaner industries for the future. @dubaifuture @dubaiculture @difc #prototypesforhumanity #MotherEarthDay #EarthDay

Access to reliable diagnostic tools is still out of reach for millions of people worldwide. What if testing didn’t need a lab? Developed by Parth Shinde at @bitspilaniofficial , HemoSift is a microfluidic chip that separates blood plasma without electricity or large machines. Using capillary action and a carefully designed flow system, it achieves 98% separation from just a few drops of blood. Compact and low-cost, it’s designed for use in low-resource settings, supporting everything from chronic disease monitoring to infectious disease screening at the point of care. A small device with the potential to make diagnostics more accessible, wherever they are needed. On #WorldHealthDay, a reminder that access is the foundation of better healthcare. @dubaifuture @dubaiculture @difc

Each year, over 92 billion kilograms of textile waste is generated globally. Only 15% is recycled, with the remaining 85% either burned or sent to landfill. Developed by Nienke Leenders at the Univeristy of Amsterdam @uva_amsterdam , and presented as one of the 100 prototypes showcased at Prototypes for Humanity 2025, Polycotton Waste Valorization addresses one of the most complex challenges in textile recycling: blended materials. By using acid hydrolysis to separate cotton and polyester, the process enables both materials to be reused, resulting in a closed-loop approach to one of the largest waste streams in the world, reducing reliance on fossil-based materials and moving closer to circular production. On World Zero Waste Day, this is a reminder that waste is often a design problem. At Prototypes for Humanity, we support research that translates into practical, scalable solutions. @dubaifuture @dubaiculture @difc

Today, on World Tuberculosis Day, we are reminded that one of the greatest barriers to tackling tuberculosis is access to fast, accurate diagnosis. Each year, over 10 million people fall ill with tuberculosis, and more than 1.5 million lives are lost, despite the disease being both preventable and curable. Developed by Dr. Hira Fareed at the @Lahore University of Management Sciences (@lifeatlums ), TB-AI is an AI-powered diagnostic platform that analyses microscope slide images to detect tuberculosis and malaria. Using a smartphone camera and internet connection, laboratories can upload images and receive results within minutes, improving accuracy, reducing human error, and supporting facilities without specialist expertise. By integrating into existing workflows, TB-AI enables earlier diagnosis, faster treatment, and reduced transmission in the settings that need it most. At Prototypes for Humanity, we support research that moves beyond the lab, enabling real-world impact and expanding access to life-saving care at scale. @dubaifuture @dubaiculture @difc #TBAI #WorldTBDay #Tuberculosis #GlobalHealth

Today, on @unesco World Water Day, we are reminded of the right of every person to access safe, clean water and the urgent need to protect this fundamental resource for generations to come. Dushanthi Wanninayake at Griffith University is tackling one of the most persistent threats to our water systems, PFAS contamination, a growing global crisis affecting groundwater and surface water sources. Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are man-made substances that resist natural degradation and accumulate in the environment and the human body. Communities living near contaminated water sources face serious and often life-threatening health consequences, yet the challenge of removing these chemicals effectively remains one of the most complex problems in environmental science. While existing techniques can filter or concentrate PFAS from water, they are unable to fully destroy them, simply shifting the problem from one medium to another. Dushanthi’s research goes further, aiming to mineralise PFAS chemicals entirely by breaking them down into their base elements and permanently removing them from the environment. At Prototypes for Humanity, we champion research that addresses the world’s most urgent environmental and public health challenges. Dushanthi’s work represents a significant step toward cleaner water and safer communities. @dubaiculture @dubaifuture @difc #prototypesforhumanity

What if everyday menstrual products could monitor your health in real time? Abanoub Abdelmalak and Saeed Javadizadeh, under the supervision of Dr. Ali Adibi and Dr. Ashkan Zandi at the Georgia Institute of Technology, integrated sensors into pads and tampons to measure menstrual blood volume, haemoglobin levels, and critical biomarkers that can indicate inflammation, cancer, and many other health issues that often go undiagnosed, with data automatically sent to a mobile app for alerts and trend tracking. Non-invasive, cost-effective, easily accessible, and designed for daily use, Smart Feminine Products empower women to better understand their bodies and monitor their health from the comfort of their own homes. This technology represents a key step toward achieving equity in healthcare, expanding access to personalised care. @dubaiculture @dubaifuture @difc #prototypesforhumanity #smartfemininecare #menstrualhealth #womenshealth #femtech

Today, on World Hearing Day, we’re highlighting Dari, one of the 100 prototypes showcased at Prototypes for Humanity 2025. Developed by Sejoon Kim, Hyunseo (Suji) Kim, Lukas Wiesner, and Lara Kurt, and supervised by Dr. Bc Hwang at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Dari is a wearable AI system designed with accessibility and usability in mind. It bridges communication between deaf and hearing individuals by translating American Sign Language into speech in real time. Combining smart glasses and an armband, it uses AI-powered gesture recognition, live captioning, and environmental sound awareness to enable people to communicate naturally and easily. An intuitive, privacy-conscious solution, Dari empowers deaf users to engage in independent conversations without relying on interpreters. It creates new opportunities for communication in everyday settings, whether in public spaces, workplaces, or social environments. Dari represents a future where communication is inclusive and accessible for all, transforming how we connect, regardless of challenges. @dubaiculture @dubaifuture @difc #prototypesforhumanity #worldhearingday #aiforgood #hearingloss #humanconnection
