Last Saturday we had an incredible time taking part in @girlguidingscot Cityscapes Adventure in Glasgow! 💪💜
Protests and Suffragettes were one of 15 organisations providing fun, engaging and unique activities for over 3000 Girl Guides, Brownies & Rainbows. P&S HQ took over Glasgow City Chambers for the day, where the P&S Team facilitated activities like:
🎨 Mindful Colouring Pages w/ our Suffragettes in STEM (Isabella Elder, Chrystal Macmillan, Dr. Flora Murray & Dr Elsie Inglis.)
✂️ Badgemaking w/ powerful & feminist slogans, and original WSPU & Women’s Freedom League Badges.
🃏 Lightning Rounds of our Scottish Suffragette Playing Card Games- complete w/ stickers for prizes!
🎪 & Our Suffragette Stall where we chatted about alllll things Scottish Suffragettes, Rent Strikers and Changemakers.
It was an amazing — and very busy — day! We had the best time chatting with the young women of the future about the fantastic, trailblazing women of their past.
If you have an event with girls, or young women, coming up & would like to hire Protests and Suffragettes to bring along our Suffragette Stall or Activities- get in touch!

📽️Film Screening — Caroline Walker: Women’s Work
30 years ago a courageous group of women occupied the building at Kinning Park Complex, demanding it be put into community hands. Over the years that followed women, artists, and women artists have had a key role to play in keeping our building open with the community at its centre.
Join @kinningparkcomplex and Protests and Suffragettes for a special showing of Caroline Walker: Women’s Work, directed by Nicola Black!
In this documentary internationally acclaimed artist Caroline Walker explores the diverse social, economic and cultural experiences of women living in contemporary society. Teresa Billington- Greig, born 15th October 1876, was a writer, suffragette and one of the founders of the Women’s Freedom League, which donned the slogan: ‘DARE TO BE FREE’
A runaway, who rejected her family’s religion— TBG had a belief in equal rights, and wasn’t afraid to use her voice, which made her a powerful organiser. She played an important role in drumming up support for the WFL in Scotland, where her oratory impressed local activists Helen Fraser and Janie Allan.
She was also a talented writer, working as a freelance journalist in her later life and publishing two books : The Militant Suffrage Movement (1911), which contained criticism of suffragettes’ tactics, and The Consumer in Revolt (1912), which explored links between consumerism and feminism.
These are just a few of the many reasons we love TBG here at Protests and Suffragettes, and why she has been the inspiration behind so much of our new merch! A few months ago, we began screen printing our brand-new ‘Rebel’ totes; stamped with an incredible quote said about Teresa Billington-Greig in 1910.
We’ve been working hard to create more of these beautiful totes, and THIS WEEKEND is your chance to get your hands on one, as we’re taking them to @yardworksglasgow in Glasgow! Grab yourself a ticket and come on down to see us & the P&S Pop-up— Annnnnnddddd, to grab your own ‘Rebel’ tote!
We can’t wait to see you there! 💥
⭐️ Herstory Highlights:
📣 Dr Sarah Parker Remond was a lecturer, doctor, activist & campaigner from the US, born in 1826.
She fought for education which led her to become a lecturer & a doctor – an incredible achievement considering the challenges she faced in the early 1800s.
🗣Her lived experience as an activist & woman of colour gave her great insight, which she brought to the UK. She helped organise campaigns across Scotland, England, and Ireland against slavery, & she spoke out for women’s rights – packing out venues in Scotland.
Dr Sarah Remond Parker is 1 of over 40 women activists featured in our Scotland’s Suffragette Playing cards. The cards feature activists who campaigned from around the world for #VotesForWomen and #equality for all ✊

One of my favourite artist and designers is Dorothy Carleton Smyth (1880-1933). Described as a ‘dark, vivid type’ at GSA she would have been the school’s first female director. A head of her time, Smyth was an around boss-lady. For more information check out @gsaarchives blog post entitled ‘Dorothy Carleton Smyth - “a living force contained in a human body”.

#throwbacktuesdays Today we’re casting our mind to the series of Wikipedia Workshops 🗣️ we ran in back 2023! In collaboration w/ multiple community partners 🤝
One of our workshops, found us collaborating with the incredible folks @womenslibrary , where we got to see Maud Joachim's hunger strike medal up close, and Sue John shared about fundraising for its purchase 🏅 It was incredible to see this piece of Scottish herstory secured — and Becky Male, GWL volunteer and brilliant Wiki-editor, spoke about her work editing the Suffragette Penny and Hunger Strike Medal Wikipedia articles!
These workshops were supported by @TNLCommunityFundScotland@tnlcommunityfund & WikimediaUK
Wikipedia Workshops are part of Protests and Suffragettes commitment to knowledge activism and continually raising the profile of Scottish Suffragettes & Changemakers. And we’d love to do more! Got a research project or group interested in editing, research and activism? Hire P&S to facilitate one of our Wiki Workshops!

🗣 Shoutout to the amazing @perthwomenonwikipedia , who were highlighted in an article by the National on Tuesday, in which we also got a wee mention!
The work they’re doing to write women back into Perth’s mighty history – is incredible, essential and glorious. Congrats to Gill Ryan, who heads up the project, and to all involved!
