From the archives….This wasn’t even close to the best photo in the folder of Baja images, but it was one of the few I shot vertically. This was way before cell phones and social media. Note the lone surfer coming in from the point obviously surfed out and the waves keep coming with no one out. Dreamy
I shot this famous awkward moment during the 2003 Pipe Masters. @kellyslater approached Andy as he was stretching before the Finals. Back then it was 4 man heats. Phil MacDonald and Joel Parkinson were the other two. The World Title was on the line in this final tour event - Kelly vs. Andy, winner take all. Did Kelly approach Andy to psych him out reaching into his bag of competitive tricks? I’ve heard him deny it in interviews but based on his desire to win I say it’s probable. Anyway, Kelly ended up in fourth place in the event and Andy won both the Pipe Masters and World title.
