Cymaint o hwyl dydd Mercher yn y Mart!!! What a day at Devil's Bridge Mart this Wednesday! Undeterred by the drizzle, a throng of bidders came along to support our farmers, raise money to support Tir Dewi, celebrate the work of many local hands and hooves and seize the chance to own a beautiful hat handcrafted from the local landscape. We had demonstrations by our indomitable spinners-in-the-rain from the Ceredigion Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, wonderful performances and presentation of the hats by pupils from Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos with @kirstynconnects and Ysgol Mynach with @worldwidewelshman , and a playful spirit of competition amongst the crowd. By the end of the day, all 37 unique speckled hats were sold to a host of happy bidders, raising £2000 and counting, as donations continue to roll in! [Big gratitude to Naomi and Sara from @tircanol for invaluable accounting support!] All proceeds go to Tir Dewi, a hugely important charity which supports farmers in hardship, and it was a privilege to be in the presence of The Venerable Eileen Davies, who founded the charity in 2015. This was the culmination of a year’s skilled work, creativity and care by many, many local hands... Heartfelt thanks to all who came along, and all who have contributed to the project - it was a truly fabulous day! ...and there are rumblings of a repeat event next year... let's see!!! Fabulous photos here taken by @fforestfilms [2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10] and @timcoleridge [1,3,4]

This auction is part of Prosiect Brith (Speckle Project) - a community textile project transforming local Welsh Hill Speckled Face Wool into a flock of unique, hyper-local hats, to raise money for farm support charity Tir Dewi. The hat auction will be held at Devil’s Bridge Mart on Wednesday 10th July 2024, 12:00 – 14:00. Please come along to support our farmers, celebrate the work of many local hands and hooves and seize the chance to own a beautiful hat handcrafted from the local landscape! The more the merrier! Welsh Hill Speckled Face Sheep were bred in Devil’s Bridge in the 19th century to produce higher value wool on a hardy sheep suited to the Welsh uplands. Yet the market value of a speckled fleece is now less than it costs a farmer to shear. As a way to reevaluate this ‘shear waste’, Prosiect Brith revives the old custom gwlana (wool-gathering): Through workshops, walks, publications and events, the project invites community groups along the river Rheidol to collaborate in making handknitted hats in patterns and colours gathered along the river Rheidol, with yarn handspun from local flocks of Welsh Hill Speckled Face Sheep. Partners and participants involved so far... - The Welsh Hill Speckled Face Sheep Society - Tymawr Farm, Nantgwyn Farm, Tynrhos Farm, Pantyrofyn Farm, Bryn Glas Farm, Pendre Farm - Devil’s Bridge Mart - Llwyn yr Eos Primary School - Devil’s Bridge Primary School - The Ceredigion Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers - Penparcau Knit & Chat - Aberfoodsurplus - Tir Canol - Tir Dewi #defaidpenfrithbryniaucymru #gwlânpenfrith #gwlâncymreig #welshwool #slowtextiles #farmingmentalhealth #fibreshedwales #communitytextiles #alternativeeconomy #knittingcommunity

Mae’r arwerthiant hwn rhan o Brosiect Brith - prosiect tecstilau cymunedol yn trawsnewid gwlân o Ddefaid Penfrith Bryniau Cymru yn braidd o hetiau hyper-leol unigryw, wedi’u gwneud â llaw yn gyfan gwbl, i godi arian ar gyfer elusen cymorth fferm Tir Dewi. Cynhelir yr arwerthiant hetiau ym Mart Pontarfynach, dydd Mercher 10 Gorffenaf 2024, 12:00 – 14:00. Dewch yn llu i gefnogi ein ffermwyr, dathlu gwaith dwylo a charnau lleol niferus, a bachu ar y cyfle i fod yn berchen ar het hardd wedi’i gwneud â llaw o’r dirwedd leol! Roedd Defaid Penfrith Bryniau Cymru yn cael eu magu ym Mhontarfynach yn y 19eg ganrif i gynhyrchu gwlân uwch ei werth ar ddefaid gwydn addas i diroedd uchel Cymru. Ond mae gwerth cnu dafad benfrith erbyn hyn yn is na’r gost o’i chneifio i’r ffermwr. Fel ffordd o ail-werthuso’r ‘gwastraff cnu’ yma mae ‘Prosiect Brith’ yn atgyfodi’r hen arfer o ‘wlana’: Drwy weithdai, teithiau cerdded, cyhoeddiadau a digwyddiadau, mae’r prosiect yn gwahodd grwpiau cymunedol ar hyd y Rheidol i gydweithredu i wneud hetiau wedi eu gwau â llaw mewn patrymau a lliwiau a gasglwyd ar hyd y Rheidol, o wlân a nyddwyd â llaw o breiddiau lleol o Ddefaid Penfrith Bryniau Cymru. Partneriaid a chyfranogwyr a fydd yn cymryd rhan hyd yn hyn... - Cymdeithas Defaid Penfrith Bryniau Cymru - Ffermydd Tymawr, Nantgwyn, Tynrhos, Pantyrofyn, Bryn Glas, Pendre - Mart Pontarfynach - Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos - Ysgol Mynach - Gild Gwehyddion, Nyddwyr a Lliwyddion Ceredigion - Penparcau Knit & Chat - Bwyd Dros Ben Aber - Tir Canol - Tir Dewi #defaidpenfrithbryniaucymru #gwlânpenfrith #gwlâncymreig #welshwool #slowtextiles #farmingmentalhealth #fibreshedwales #communitytextiles #alternativeeconomy #knittingcommunity
