Please join us this Saturday, September 6th for the opening of THIS TIME, an exhibition of new work by Anna-Sophia Vukovich.
Our cities are gridded. Signs and symbols direct how we move through space and time. I have been making small oil paintings (13 x 15 inches) that draw on everyday signs and visual language such as dashes, arrows, stripes, and lines. In these painted spaces, interrogative words such as why, how, where, when, and again simultaneously ask big and small questions and reference the ceaseless internal dialogues that accompany us as we navigate ordinary routines in our daily lives.
THIS TIME refers to the unfolding of the ever-present moment and our desire for agency within the physical and psychological structures that bind us. The paintings themselves are perhaps a trace of this effort, an exercise in moving beyond the expected.

The yard is full of holes, holes that lead to a matrix of storage troves under the visible surface of grass and dirt. Like a palinode, an ode or song that retracts what was written in a previous poem, the holes bend my looking inwards and towards an underworld of pathways and tunnels for moving, meeting and sleeping. Displaced dirt creates an opening where light might burrow a little deeper underground.

In the middle of the yard, the lilting brick wall faces an intricately-cut two-way mirror. The wall structure is made up of 500 meticulously made palm-sized bricks, and fitted with a hidden eye level digital camera that will record from the perspective of the sculpture. While the gaze of the camera is steady, the mirror’s changing transparency throughout the day will alter this camera footage, fading from perfect reflection to transparent glass. The sculpture’s ability to see past its own reflection will depend on weather and time of day, revealing a shifting perspective that fluctuates between clarity and obstruction, certainty and ambiguity.
Catching up on recent press from earlier this year. Thank you to @ashley.diana.culver and @corneliamagazine for the feature 🌱 🌟 , as well as @cbcarts and Leah Collins for including us in their list of domestic project spaces. We are alongside some incredible company 💕 (links in bio). More soon xoxo

Season Creep is a site specific project inspired by phenological observations and an interest in rudimentary divination and forecasting tools. Sun prints and sculptural objects act as analog recording devices for atmospheric changes in their vicinity. Overriding the function of wooden vernacular tools used to foretell good and inclement weather, these ersatz weather sticks are scattered among the wild garden’s undergrowth, guiding the experience of looking as their patina changes over time in response to their micro environments.
The exhibition is concerned with natural cycles and their disruption, domesticity, work, plant life, and how people and things are mutually shaped by their surroundings.
Season Creep remains open by appointment until October 5th ~ reach out to @projectunderwing or message me to arrange a visit ✉️
