A quick journey from toile to final garment 💕 I have to say, for a quick self drafted project this one has really paid off and was a lot of fun to make! My favourite part? It has drawstrings at the waist so I can make it fitted or more relaxed to match with how I'm feeling on the day (LOVE adjustable clothing!) Now I just need the UK weather to remember it's supposed to be summer and I'll be sorted! #summersewing #selfdrafted #patternmaking

Part 1 of my analysis was breaking down the design. Part 2 is planning how I'm going to draft it 🙌 Picking the right starting point is always really important. And recently I've found that a lot of my students get stuck on creating blocks and are telling themselves that they can't start drafting their own clothes unless they've perfected their basic blocks. Now I do love my blocks, this is not me staying you don't need blocks...but maybe you don't need blocks right now? Hear me out...if you're a beginner pattern maker I'd much rather you get to the good bit as quickly as possible and gain confidence along the way. That means getting to the drafting and seeing all the possibilities that pattern cutting can open up. Do you need a block if you're creating complex garments? Yes. Do you need a block when you're just starting out? No. Using a simple pattern that you already have at home and making small changes is a fantastic place to start: - Change the neck - Add a different sleeve - Change the volume - Make a top into a dress - Add a wrap detail - Cut a while section away - Change the darts into seams The ways that you can get creative with the patterns you already have at home are endless. You just need to know how to apply some basic pattern cutting techniques 💕 For our summer design project I'm encouraging students to use a pattern that they have at home. No blocks needed 👀 The project kicks off on Tuesday the 12th of May...just a few days left to join us! This is part 2 of this little analysis, go to yesterday's post for part 1 #sewingcommunity #fashiondesign #patternmaking

If we're being well behaved then all our drafting should start with analysing the sketch and making a drafting plan. And that's exactly what I'm doing for my summer waistcoat! If you're a subscriber to my newsletter you'll have a more detailed breakdown in your inbox, and more details of how this garment turned out on their way 👀 This is part 1 of this little analysis, stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow. Why do you think I decided not to do a facing and instead take the lining to the edge? Let me know in the below. #sewingcommunity #fashiondesign #sewingpatterndesigner

I'm back at @newcrafthouse teaching my popular Pattern Cutting Techniques full day workshop on May 24th, and there are still a couple of spots left 👀 I think learning to work with sewing patterns and blocks is a real game changer, but I'm a little biased. Although last month a student left saying "it has been the most valuable workshop I have done so far" so clearly she thought so too! Head to @newcrafthouse or my link in bio to book your place. #sewingworkshop #patterndraftingclass #sewingpattern

I love occasion wear! Red carpet, wedding dresses, ball gowns...I just love everything that goes into drafting and making these works of art. So the MET is one of my favourite occasions to sit and puzzle out how they were made. Now we can go super complex with this, but if you wanted to be inspired by some of these details here are the ways that you could draft something similar using the tutorials available inside my membership 👀 You'll find me day dreaming about walking this red carpet in a gorgeous self drafted gown 💕 send this to someone else who's also obsessed with occasion wear! #sewingcommunity #weddingsewing #metgaladress #howitsmade

Fabric choice makes such a difference to the finished garment, especially in summer when breathability and weight matter so much more than we often think. Swipe through for a few things I always do when picking fabric for summer projects. And if you want even more detail on fibres and weaves, there's a full guide on the blog. Link in bio. #patternmaking #sewingcommunity #homesewing

Have you ever finished a course, picked up loads of new skills, sat down to actually make something...and completely frozen? You're not alone. It happens all the time, and it's exactly why I created the Summer Design Project. It's an 8 week guided challenge running from May 12th and is open to all Project Patterns members. You choose what you make and use the membership courses to guide you. I provide the structure, the live sessions, and the support to get you from mood board to finished garment. No brief. No set design. Just your idea, properly seen through to the end. Swipe to see how it all works, and if you want to join us, the membership is open now for new students. Doors close May 11th. Link in bio! #patternmaking #sewingcommunity #homesewing
