fairies . 17x11. from digi to riso
is about the folk religion of mother goddess worshipping (đạo mẫu)
written in my accompanying zine:
🪩 Low lights filtering through the patterns of carved doors. Music beat with each strike of the drums, cadences and rhythmic strumming of strings. Decorations sparkle with the sequins on costumes. Laughter. Dancing. An occassional rain of green. I can be describing a club scene where the music is actually good or a Hầu Đồng ceremony.
🕯️Đạo Mẫu’s existence makes it acceptable for queerness to be visible, the root of the religion is based in harmony and liberation, in human connection with humans and with nature, in letting go of materialistic needs and sorrows, in being free in front of the Gods. It is believed that by being in the perfect middle, with their yin and yang balanced, these queer mediums are closer to the spirtis, to higher beings. And that’s my thesis on why being queer is superior.

soulmates . 17x11 . from digi to riso
is about unconventional unconditional love forms
written in my zine that lays contextual understanding for these work, focusing on queer presences in vietnamese history:
💗 “The Vietnamese word for soulmate “tri kỷ” had deviated from “tri âm”, when one says “bạn tri âm”, or “friend who understands mind/knowledge and music”, they’d be referring to the relationship between Tử Kỳ and Bá Nha. The term “bạn tri âm” took on the meaning “friends who understands music well” and then eventually became “friends who understand each other completely”.
💗 Similarly, love between souls who found understanding in each other by shared values is a core that Comaraderie also embody. I shall pinpoint the resistance against france (1930-1954) and the resistance against the united states (1960-1975) as the periods that revolutionary love blossomed at its peak.
💗 Regardless of the details of their relationships, I personally think that we should not label it as anything other than profound soulmate love between human beings. Proof of their affection also suggests an acceptance of deep bonds between same-sex scholars, students, soldiers and human beings that had persisted since earlier centuries.”

the play . 17x11 . from digi to riso
is about gender as a performance
🪴 written in belonging to shadows, the accompanying zine with the artworks of this exhibition:
“What counted as “gender” was more aligned with the word “giới”, meaning “limit, kind, group, domain”. Similarly with modern time, categorizing of the female and male kinds manifests in social responsibilities, but not in biology.
🧚🏻♂️ Various literature in the 20th century captured characters who would crossdress in various contexts, like the character Lan who dresses as a monk at a temple in Khái Hưng’s Butterfly Soul Dreaming of an Immortal. Others depict women crossdressed as men in order to infiltrate spaces women were not allowed to be presented.
🧚🏻♀️ In The Female General Lưu, Lưu Mộng Lan is the Mulan archetype, who dresses as a hero, commanding soldiers to take revenge for her father, lead uprisings against villains.
🧚 The story Hiếu Nữ Nam Trang, a daughter named Ả Thông dresses as a boy to accompany the father in his building his businesses, bringing prosper to the family.
🧚🏻♂️ The story of Mạnh Lệ Quân centers a crossdressing protagonist, she used to be a daughter then escaped into living as a man, after she was engaged with a man she disapproves. Mạnh Lệ Quân goes so far as having a married relationship with another woman, and lives with reputable career in the palace court.”

Bringing together artists working across photography, painting, installation, and digital media, the exhibition considers belonging not as a fixed state, but as a practice shaped by migration, memory, identity, and care.
Developed through AACT’s newcomer artist mentorship program, the exhibition emerges from workshops, dialogue, and shared exploration, reflecting on what it means to arrive, remember, and remain connected across distance and time.

🌏 stuck in between worlds 🌎
riding on a parallel line
not here nor there
or anywhere
.
i totally forgot that i made this like months ago.
.
the old world holds comfort and familiarity, but they have already casted you out long ago. the new world holds opportunity and learning, but requires you to bare teeth everywhere you go. where does one belong to when nowhere is safe.

✨Meet @professionaldanner in our AACT Newcomer Artist Mentorship Program.
When we asked what they’re most excited to explore during the mentorship, they shared:
“Figuring out what to do with the skills I already have - how to use them to tell stories, see what others are doing in the art world, and think about how art can help meet the values and needs of the community.”
Reflecting on the program so far, they shared:
“The biggest things I’ve learned so far are how diverse the art scene is, how everyone in the program’s disciplines are so different, and philosophies in belonging: is it taking up space? is it carving out your own place? is it adapting?”
Stay tuned as we share the program cohort ✨
💫 I painted my first mural with some awesome people at @murallcollective 💫
Who would have thunk that doing physical mediums together can make you feel the connection tingles? 🤯🤯🤯 i love y’all @princezorah and @mariadelosangeles_illu even though i’ve known y’all for a week and 2 days but the magic was there and i’m so lucky to paint with you both 🥺 and on the last slide is the full mural - it’s so so pretty, every artist cooked the fuck up and they’re super talented. More detail posts will come soon!
🩷❤️
Thank you Wenting, Edan and Caitlyn for being wonderful mentors who keep inspiring me to want to do more, not just in art, but in… making your own food, smiling more, maybe have a better, life loving lifestyle? You guys are really inspiring and very filled with positive energy!! Thank you for organizing the program!
