This is my (slightly delayed) Earth Day post š
The biodiversity weāre surrounded by (and part of) is the result of billions of years of evolution, interaction, and change.
From single-celled life to complex ecosystems, everything you see is part of the same continuous story.
We showed up late in that timeline. And have the responsibility to help shape what happens nextā¦

Where do faculty get those robes from?!?
At the @uscdornsife convocation I asked the Biology Faculty the hard hitting questions:
1) Who are you wearing? (i.e. where did you get your PhD from)
2) What year did you defend your PhD thesis?
Youāre going to want to stay to the end to hear the lore of when Dean Steve Finkel defendedā¦
No snooze button in academiaā¦
Education/academia have to be one of the few vocations where unpaid work is ingrained. A lot of academic positions are technically 9-month appointments, so summers are often when faculty shift gears into writing, research, planning for next academic year, writing, conferences, and catching up on everything that didnāt fit in during the semester.
So for many academics, summer becomes a weird combination of unpaid labour, grant-funded salary, side contracts, or just⦠continuing to work because the job never really āturns offā.

Happy 100th birthday @davidattenborough
Seems like a bad time to cut funding to science and the environmentā¦

An unexpected part of teaching is how often students just need someone to listen to them.
Office hours were originally intended for course support. In reality they are a sounding board for students as they navigate life: degrees, careers, relationships, mental health struggles, family/friend drama. My door is open and Iām here for all of it.
Students, donāt ever feel the need to overshare or purposely be weird. But if the tea is piping hot⦠my mug is ready IYKWIM
Love letter to my graduating seniors:
Be proud of all you have accomplished and venture out knowing that youāre capable of difficult things, and have the ability to problem solve and navigate this world. Never stop learning and growing. And never stop striving to make this world a better place.
Most importantly, please always keep in contact with me! Once my student, always my student

I give it my all to my students and my work during the week (and in all honesty do lots over the weekend too).
But during weekends the priority is exploring, getting outside, connecting and spending time with the kids and @court.miller after weāve been running our separate ways during the week.
My family is incredibly generous and forgiving with how much time and attention my work can take away from them, but never want them to feel like they come second.
