wecu, shadow ban 👀 and we are not a fan.
shadow banning is when somebody’s posts or account remain online but are made invisible to other users, affecting their ability to promote their work and ultimately be seen and heard. this directly impacts their livelihoods including their generation of income, for which they may rely upon visibility within these platforms.
shadow banning is an act of censorship and silencing from platforms which violates the human right to freedom of speech and expression, often targeting people and communities who might be challenging the status quo of society. mirroring our IRL society, it is marginalised people who are targeted the most.

wecu have been working on a research project to uncover wtf is going on with the shadow ban 👀
we’ve found out that despite the shadow ban affecting a lot of people, there is still a lack of clarity surrounding what it is and how it works. it doesn’t help that the platforms don’t admit that they shadow ban or don’t want to help people solve it when it happens to them. but wecu know it's very real and it's silencing marginalised people online, causing direct harm to peoples’ livelihoods.
as much as weallc what these platforms are doing and dream of leaving these platforms, it isn’t that easy and we all feel like we need to stay here for multiple reasons. so, we need to work together to make it safer and support each other 💜
