I have been really enjoying the Nest and its summer ambience. I had started climbing there to avoid the summer heat but also in anticipation of potentially working the Sage in the fall. I found myself struggling to conjure motivation and stoke for the Sage. This forced me to reflect on something I have been contemplating over the last year. The balance between one’s natural drive, motivation and stoke Vs. One’s goals and aspirations. Aiden Roberts speaks to this regularly on the Careless Talk podcast and it was his story of working Flight of the Birds and his waining and waxing motivation for the line that I kept returning to while trying to convince myself to continue working the Sage.
Eventually, I realized that sometimes one’s natural stoke and motivation will align with their goals and that can lead to powerful performances. But often those don’t line up and that’s ok, too. As I spent more time at the Nest, I began playing on other lines and found my natural motivation trending towards trying to link two pre-existing lines: Baby Bird and The Bleeding Edge of Free Will. So I allowed myself to follow my spontaneous stoke for linking these two lines for a few sessions and stepped away from the Sage.
In doing this, I not only was able to link these two lines and FA , in my bias opinion a fun new addition to the Nest, Airforce 1 (V10/11 or 7C+/8A). But I ended up finding at the end of this journey I was suddenly motivated to keep trying the Sage some this fall. It’s funny how one’s stoke comes and goes and I’m excited to see where it leads me this fall season!
