Nolan and I talked a lot about finding a way to create tension in our images. We wanted to find a way to bring attention to a very plain, domestic moment and lift it gently into a place of hazard. I had such a good time with a kind crew, for a good cause. We’d hoped that if 1 child can avoid a burn through awareness raised through this project, it would be well worth our efforts and the massive amount of time and energy that everyone on the crew gave to this. It was such a pleasure to work with Fela in Mexico City earlier this year. It was wonderful to work with old friends and make some new ones on a project that really showed how much return you get on the investment of time in prep. To make all of these macros come to life, we put a lot of energy into testing with our amazing SFX team days in advance to get the textures and timing just right on each setup. Finn Wolfhard - “Objection!” Staying in huts off of side roads without names, hiking with gear in cartoonishly deep snow, finding glaciers instead of caves we had set out for, loading film in the airport and in the back of a minivan, shooting stop motion on a 16mm camera while counting the revolutions of the mirror and carrying around a styrofoam dog through Alberta’s most beautiful mountains.
