What an incredible evening at the launch of..
UBUNTU – I am because we are
@camberwellspace @camberwellual
Organised by the phenomenal team including Sharon Bertram, Jason Forrest and Ian Thompson. It was such a privilege to attend with my family and Pa — the buzz of conversation, the creative energy, the rich community spirit — I feel truly inspired.
This exhibition is so much more than just an art show. Rooted in the African philosophy of ubuntu — “I am because we are” — it invites us into a space of connection, collaboration and shared humanity. Running from late September to December 2025, the programme brings together exhibitions, workshops, local artists, community groups, schools and families to explore belonging, collective creativity and the deeper ties that bind us.
And on the note of heritage and identity: we often speak of Black History Month as though it belongs only to one month, but here’s the truth — acknowledging, celebrating and learning from Black history, culture and creativity is every day. This project affirms that it’s not a once-a-year moment, but a continual journey of recognition, respect and yes, radical love.
One quote I keep returning to is by Desmond Tutu:
“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”
It perfectly echoes the essence of Ubuntu — that our stories, our art, our lived experience are intertwined, and when we celebrate one another we also uplift ourselves.
So, here’s my heartfelt invitation to you: visit the exhibition, join a workshop, bring your friends or family, embrace the conversation. Support the creatives, support your community, and above all—get involved. Each one of us has something to contribute; each one of us belongs.
