The Space That Listens
Presentation Sonic Acts Spatial Sound Course Rijksakademie
Reserve your free spot via the link in bio   At the Rijksakademie, the final presentation of the Sonic Acts Spatial Sound Course unfolds as an exploration of space as a resonant instrument. Over a two-month programme led by composer, sound artist, and performer Ji Youn Kang, artists developed works that consider sound as a material force capable of shaping perception, architecture, and atmosphere.   Through installations and performances, the participants share the results of their investigations: how sound travels, reflects, and unfolds through different environments, and how architecture can respond and resonate in return. The presentation opens an evolving field of listening, where the boundaries between space, sound, and presence soften, and the rooms themselves seem to breathe.   The presentation features Ji Youn Kang and the following workshop participants/artists: Rijksakademie residents AYO, Priss Niinikoski and Chin Tsao, former Rijksakademie tech fellow Dmytro Tentiuk, and Lena Chen, Anushka Chkheidze, Anne Marie Deacy, Ildikó Horváth, Iza Koczanowska, Li Qihang, Dimitra Sofroniou, Malou van der Veld and Eunjin Yoo. @sonicacts @studio__ayo @prissui @pope_sangreta @d.tentiuk #rijksakademie

Current resident Priss Niinikoski is performing on Thursday 12 February at @lesateliersclaus during expanded cinema night vol2. The performance, developed collaboratively by visual artist Esth Fantuzzi and sound artist Priss Niinikoski, is an expanded-cinema piece that combines 16 mm projection with tape sound and live performance. We explore diffraction, self-representation, and transformation through analogue images, voices, and projected light. Expanded cinema nights is a series of cinematic performances experiencing mostly analog moving image with sound in space. These works present different materials and techniques, works in progress or adaptations in the space, for instance. These series are made in collaboration between les ateliers claus and LABO BxL. #prissniinikoski #rijksakademie

Welcome, @prissui ! Exploring the intersections of computational thinking both in textiles and electronics, Priss Niinikoski addresses the elements of risk and vulnerability when operating with tools and systems. Translating her research into spatial textile apparatuses, she explores how frictions and traces act as forms of communication. Combining textiles with sonic and digital materialities, she builds on coding acoustic environments and electronic textile interfaces. Her ongoing research focuses on communication, acoustics, and the interplay between digital and analogue systems, investigating how uncertainties and risks reorientate systems to new patterns and expressions. Sonic Mediations, 2024 @emmamuseum ”The artwork is on display in the Dialogues collection exhibition, and the related performances are also part of the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection. Sonic Mediations was the first performance acquired for the collection, documented and archived in the collection management systems. The performance documentation serves both as archival material for the collection deposit and as a set of instructions for reperforming the piece.” Starting today, you can experience Sonic Mediations both on-site at EMMA and online via EMMA Zone. 📷 Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection © Paula Virta / EMMA More information coming soon!

MEET THE RESIDENTS 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗶𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗼𝘀𝗸𝗶 (1997, Finland) is an artist from Helsinki who weaves together sonic, digital, and textile materialities through interactive installations, while exploring how systems unravel and reconfigure under friction. At MORPHO, Priss will expand her research into spatial acts and acoustically performative spaces, threading them with the radicality of bodies, voice, and breath. She will work on an experimental soundsystem that explores sound through sculptural form in collaboration with local vocalists, to shape a space where voice and breath form a living, acoustically responsive environment. 🦋 @prissui 📸 @milesfischler In partnership with @kulttuurirahasto

Sonic mediations— performance and installation—is currently on view at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, as part of the Saastamoinen Foundation’s Dialogues exhibition. I’m beyond thrilled that this is the first-ever performance piece acquired for the Foundation’s art collection. I had the honor of performing at the opening of Arte Povera – A New Chapter and Karin Hellman on April 8, alongside inspiring works by artists known for their creative use of materials, space, and textiles: Maria Lai, Louise Bourgeois, Senga Nengudi, Eva Hesse, Marisa Merz, Ana Lupas, and many more. I highly recommend to visit the exhibition! Thank you, from the heart, to @saastamoinenfoundation and the brilliant team at @emmamuseum —your trust means everything. There are still a few chances to experience the performance this spring—spaces are limited, so booking ahead is recommended: Upcoming performances:
April 23 • 5:00 | 5:30 | 6:00
April 26 • 3:00 | 3:30 | 4:00
May 21 • 5:00 | 6:00 To book and read more link in bio. 📸 Saara Vuola, 2024

Recap of 2024 Automata Installation at Villa Filanda Antonini ~~~ 2025 has kicked off with exciting things ahead: ⭐️ Sonic mediations (2024) will be installed at EMMA Museum (@emmamuseum ), accompanied by performances in April and May. Keep an eye on the dates—there will be limited capacity, so be sure to book your spot in advance! ⭐️ From August to December 2025, I’ll be returning to Antwerp for a residency at MORPHO (@morphoantwerp ). I’m thrilled to be back and to work on new projects and research during this five-month periodi. A big thank you to the Finnish Cultural Foundation (@) for making this exchange residency possible! ⭐️ If you’re in Helsinki, stay tuned! Exciting projects will be presented later this year.

”…In this garden, the inanimate animate, feeding from and into the soil, the plot lines bending to algorithmic precision. The cocoon as an incubator, whether the ”natural” remains untouched, or if all life has now become a process — a product in a machine-fed cycle...”

Thank you all for coming to the opening, feeling cute and happy with my project! Site-specific installation realised in residency @villa_filanda_antonini “Automata is a sound installation that senses and responds to changes in its acoustic environment. Through its organic and mechanical beings, it raises questions about consciousness and autonomy. Positioned between the natural and the artificial, functioning autonomously yet pre-conditioned, the installation invites to reconsider what we define as "natural" in a world shaped by human intervention. At what point does a thing become artificial? Both listening and reacting, these life-like vessels operate within the mechanistic networks of both flora and fauna.” Pictures: Federico Marin @turbofusilli

Automata (2024) “ Machines hum in the garden, tendrils of metal and circuits entangled with roots, performing through the act of possession. This digital harvest: converts beings into yields, crops of data cultivated by invisible proprietors. These lines blur: as machines tick and whirl alongside the long necks of clocks and organs, animating the garden yet belonging to neither life nor machine entirely. … “
