When we first started dreaming up COVERS, we thought we’d mainly be documenting stories from the third and largest wave of Korean immigration to the US (1965–present). There was such a strong feeling of urgency around recording the firsthand memories of the people who built so much of Korean diasporic life and culture here.
The project has since opened up into something even bigger, softer, and more interconnected than we imagined. Every song braids into our collective memory.
Some of the beautiful stories we’ll be recording this year include:
🎶 A mother and son descended from Korean farm laborers who arrived on the first boats to work on the pineapple plantations in Hawai‘i. She shared how music was passed down from the elders to the children on the plantation, songs carried across oceans and generations.
🎶 A Russian-speaking Koryo Saram family whose migration happened in waves, first after the fall of the Soviet Union, and more recently because of the Russo-Ukrainian War. The grandfather has a playlist of Russian songs he listens to on his evening walks.
For AANHPI Heritage Month, we’re inviting you to help us tend to these stories 💿✨
Your support helps us co-create recreated album covers, short documentary, interactive installations, and community programming centered around the music, migration, memories of the Korean diaspora!
