ARMY VETERAN TURNED COUNTRY STAR WINS PRIMAL LIVE SONG CONTEST
A former Army sergeant discharged with PTSD after serving in Afghanistan has won Best Original Song at the coveted Primal Live song contest in Leeds. Michael Pipe aka ‘Mountain Man‘ blew the audience and judges away with Putting My Beret Away — a deeply personal song about his struggle after leaving the military.
Originally from Leicester and now living in Catterick Garrison, the 38-year-old is rapidly becoming one of UK country music’s most exciting rising stars. His honest country music and powerful lyrics are attracting major attention, including interest from Nashville, and he recently came sixth out of 12,000 musicians after applying for Channel 4’s Your Song.
On Sunday 12th April, Mountain Man won Best Original Song at Primal Live song contest in Leeds — a charity song contest that raised over £1,000 for homeless and addiction charity, St George’s Crypt. Putting My Beret Away is not only an emphatic country hit, it is also a profound account of the struggles he has faced.

Do you all remember when we braced the stage at Primal Live 2025? Well that wasn't the end of our story.
We would like to make the exciting and possibly BIGGEST announcement of our (almost) year and a half of existence... WE HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR PRIMAL ICONS!
What is Primal Icons? The inquisitive bunch of you may be asking.. Primal Icons is a best of the best festival-like event where former finalists and winners from Primal Live shows across the country battle it out to compete for the ultimate crown.
Well put by @johnpaulmusicuk , a contestant-turned-mentor of Primal Live and well rounded cool guy (not biased), this is such a full circle moment for all of us and it would be really epic if anyone who had the time and funds to do so could come down and support us in the far away land of Liverpool. DANIALL LEE WINS BEST PERFORMANCE AT PRIMAL LIVE SONG CONTEST
Nineteen-year-old Daniall Lee is making waves on the UK music scene after winning Best Performance at Primal Live song contest, held on 28th March at Invisible Wind Factory. His electrifying performance of original tracks Complicated and New Staple Of Fashion captivated both judges and audience alike, marking a major breakthrough for the emerging alternative artist.
A truly unique artist, Daniall describes himself as “the lovechild of Jarvis Cocker and John Grant, conceived at a Bowie gig and raised on the sound of synthesizers, Britpop and showtunes.” Though often described as an 80s-inspired artist, Daniall refuses to be boxed into one genre. A multi-genre alternative musician and multi-instrumentalist, he blends electronic textures, melodic songwriting, and experimental elements into a unique musical identity.
What makes his rise even more remarkable is that much of his music is entirely self-produced. Working from his own studio, Daniall creates his own beats and crafts his recordings independently, demonstrating not only creative vision but a strong technical skillset beyond his years.
Music has been part of Daniall’s life from an early age. At just eight years old, he showed a natural flair when he began playing his father’s piano, a spark that would eventually grow into a serious passion. By 14, his talent led him to study at the renowned Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he trained under acclaimed opera singer Paul Charles Clarke.
This recent win carries deep emotional significance. Daniall has dedicated the award to Clarke, who sadly passed away last year. More than a mentor, Clarke played a transformative role in Daniall’s life, helping him overcome shyness and discover the performer within. “He brought out the performer in me,” Daniall said — a sentiment made even more poignant by the fact that his late teacher was from Liverpool, making this victory in the city feel especially meaningful.
