I won an award! I'm honoured to receive this recognition from @prideinstem as one of their ten decadal change-makers for LGBTQ+ people in STEM.
I've been part of LGBTQ+ conversations for a long time now and more recently have helped to create resources for LGBTQ+ inclusion and safety in fieldwork, but it came as such a surprise to be presented an award like this.
I felt like a bit of an impostor really. After all, so much of my recent work has been financially motivated as a way to fund my transition through extra side-hustles. Whether that was making resources for queer researchers, giving talks about LGBTQ+ identities, or the creation of my Pride pin business on Etsy, the primary motivation was always to survive and help my own finances to weather the costs of transition.
Receiving this award makes me look at things in a new way though. There are lots of ways that I could have chosen to make a little more money on the side, but I am so proud to have chosen pathways that allowed me to help other LGBTQ+ people at the same time.
I think it's important to recognise the value of self-care and ensuring your own needs are met but, if there's one thing this award has helped me to see, it is the value of helping others along the way and taking those opportunities where we can.
Thank you again to everyone who has supported my work, and I hope the next decade brings me even more amazing opportunities to support our community.
Pride in STEM is 10 this month, and we are so proud to celebrate these 10 change-makers who were proposed and voted in by the community.
We have received lovely words about their work, their impact, and their commitment to improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ people in STEM and beyond.
