Pretty Local Founder: Krista Bennett DeMaio
And then there's me!
I'm not on my board, but with so many new followers (thank you and welcome!), I'd like to introduce myself.
My name is Krista Bennett DeMaio. I have over 20 years experience as a beauty editor/writer in print, digital, and on-air. My work has appeared in magazines, including Women's Health, Oprah, Cosmopolitan, Allure, SELF, Shape (and many more that no longer exist), and websites such as healthcentral.com, bhg.com, makeup.com, realself.com, prevention.com, etc. I've done on-air beauty segments for CBS, WPIX11, and more recently, be Well, the morning show from News12 and Cheddar.
I'm the daughter of a hairdresser. I love the trade, but I've always been more of a words person. So, when I realized I could make a career out of writing about hair and other aspects of beauty, I was all in.
Realizing the need for LI-focused beauty content, I launched LI Beauty Scene in 2021. I recently rebranded as Pretty Local (my blog name), with plans to expand coverage to include style, wellness, and fitness. (There are plans for LI Beauty Scene, too.)
The advisory board I've just introduced you to includes many women I have worked with throughout my career. They have ties to Long Island and a presence in the larger beauty industry.
It's a sizable board that isn't complete! My goal is to have two professionals represent every major beauty category. I will defer to these experts as needed so I can do what I do best: create content.
Pretty Local will continue to feature local beauty, style, and wellness businesses and experts (big and small) while connecting you to news, trends, and pros in the national industry.
Follow along as we discover and explore what's hot and hidden in your neighborhood and right next door!

This is a different kind of Mani Monday. Because itâs also Melanoma Monday, the first Monday of Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Melanoma can show up on the hands, feet, and under nailsâareas people donât always think to check.
Acral melanoma (ALM) is rare (about 1â3% of cases), but itâs more likely to be diagnosed later because of that.
As Kavita Mariwalla, MD, president of @asdsskinmd and Pretty Local Pro Advisory Board Member points out, melanoma can develop on the soles of the feetâand most people simply arenât looking there.
For clients: Take a moment to look at your natural nails and skin when the polish is removed.
For pros: Youâre seeing these details up close, regularly. That quick âyou may want to have that checkedâ conversation can be life-saving.

Hereâs my Pretty Local PRO PSA: Get the pics!
Iâve been working with beauty professionals for over 20 years, and I have come across MANY, in all sectors â from behind the chair to marketing pros â who donât have professional headshots. And then a writer like me interviews them and asks for a pic to feature, and theyâre scrambling to find a good one of them alone.
It doesnât have to be an elaborate photo shoot if thatâs not your thing (or not in the budget), but having a few high-resolution, professional shots in your back pocket can be the difference between a pro who gets featured and one who doesnât!
Need a photographer? I happen to know a few!
This lovely photo was taken by @solqa.media , who always takes stunning solo shots of the Industry Night panelists. Theyâve become a perk of being on my panels. đ
New Industry Night panelist added: Dawn Spinner Davis
